DIMAPUR, AUG 27: The Dimapur Lotha Students’ Union (DLSU) organised a book release programme for “Proselytization of Christianity from Animism: Conversion and Conflict, 1872–1972”, authored by Y. Vungthungo, M.A. (History & Archaeology), B.Ed., at Dimapur Lotha Hoho Ki, Dimapur on Thursday.
The programme was chaired by Chonben Kithan and attended by representatives of various Lotha and Naga organisations, church leaders, students, youth representatives and well-wishers.
The programme began with an invocation by women pastor, Dimapur Lotha AG Church, Chanchano Ngullie, followed by a welcome address delivered by president of DLSU, Mhonbemo M. Kikon. Special songs were presented by Chon VK and Bro and Lansothung Lotha.
The book was dedicated by executive secretary, Nagamese Baptist Church Association, Rev. Lumtsuo Ezung. It was thereafter formally released by the guest of honour, chairman Unity College Dimapur, M. Patton, IAS (Retd.).
In his message, M. Patton emphasised the importance of preserving historical knowledge and encouraging scholarly works that help present and future generations understand the experiences and transformations of society.
Speaking on the objective behind the publication, DLSU president Mhonbemo M. Kikon highlighted the importance of encouraging research, writing and documentation of historical experiences.
He said that the publication was intended to contribute to a better understanding of the historical developments, social changes and conflicts associated with the spread of Christianity and conversion during the period covered by the book also highlighting on the rich history of the Lothas and Nagas in general.
A session on the author was presented by assistant finance secretary DLSU, Thungjanthung Khenchung, followed by the author’s own remarks and reflections on the book.
Representatives from the Dimapur Lotha Hoho, Dimapur Lotha Eloe Ekhüng, Dimapur Naga Students’ Union and Dimapur Lotha Youth Organization extended greetings on the occasion.
The programme also included words of gratitude from the family, delivered by director School of Music and Art, Mhonyamo Kikon.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by vice president DLSU, Thungbemo W. Kikon, who expressed appreciation to the guest of honour, author, church leaders, community organisations, participants and all those who contributed to the publication and successful conduct of the programme.
The closing benediction was pronounced by pastor Diphupar (B) Lotha Baptist Church, Rev. Wojanthung.
