DIMAPUR, AUG 29 (NPN): National Sports Day 2026 was observed with enthusiasm across institutions in Nagaland, combining formal recognition of the importance of sports with active participation from students, faculty and staff. The day, commemorated annually on August 29 to honour hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, saw vibrant celebrations at Nagaland University campuses and North East Christian University (NECU).
At Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, the programme was held on August 28 at the University Football Ground, bringing together students, teaching and non-teaching staff. Chaired by Assistant Director of Sports, Dr. Mesangutuo Meru, the event featured a welcome address by Games & Sports Secretary of NUSU-K, Toka Lohe and a special song by Bilila Sangtam of the Department of Psychology. President of NUTA-K, Dr. Ditalak Mpanme, officially kicked off the sports events. Competitive matches were held in football, basketball and volleyball, with spirited contests between senior and junior teams, as well as staff and student teams.
Meanwhile, at the Medziphema Campus of Nagaland University, celebrations were held on August 27 at the School of Agricultural Sciences. The programme was graced by Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dipak Sinha, as chief guest. In his address, he emphasised the changing role of sports in higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP), noting that sports should be recognised as an integral component of the curricular and holistic educational experience. The event featured football and volleyball matches, with victories recorded by the Junior Girls Team (UG), Senior Men’s Team and Senior Men’s Football Team.
At North East Christian University (NECU), the Sports Club organised a football penalty shootout under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”. The inaugural programme was chaired by Convenor, NECU Sports Club, Dr. Obed Kent, while Director (Academics), NECU, Dr. Kangzangding Thou, spoke on the significance of National Sports Day, highlighting the role of sports in discipline, teamwork, leadership and healthy competition. NECU Nursing emerged as champions in the boys’ category, while Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) won in the girls’ category.
Adding to the celebrations, a friendly football match was played between Sao Chang College Football Club and KIC, Local Ground, Tuensang, at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground, Tuensang. The match, organised to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and fitness, ended in a thrilling 5–5 draw at regular time. The winner was decided through a penalty shootout, where Sao Chang College emerged victorious. Both teams congratulated each other, reflecting the true spirit of sportsmanship and unity.
