DIMAPUR, AUG 30 (NPN): Two students were killed after a Gypsy allegedly hit three vehicles and subsequently ran over two pedestrians at Veterinary Colony, near an ATM booth, Burma Camp, Dimapur, on August 29 at around 7.45 p.m.
According to DCP (Crime) & PRO, Dimapur Police, traffic personnel rushed to the spot for verification and enquiry soon after receiving the information.
Police said the Gypsy (NL07 CA 5405), allegedly driven by Bumei Phom (25), first hit a Royal Enfield motorcycle, a Maruti car and a pickup auto before running over two pedestrians.
The two pedestrians, identified as Gaisinlung Dhangmei (17) and Machangbou Charenamai (15), were seriously injured. Police said Machangbou succumbed to his injuries at District Hospital, Dimapur, while Gaisinlung died while undergoing treatment at Nikos Hospital, Dimapur.
The accused driver, Bumei Phom, son of Yamthong Phom of Yaongyimchen village, Longleng district, and presently residing at Moa Colony, Burma Camp, Dimapur, was arrested.
A case has been registered at East Police Station under various sections of the BNS and MV Act, and investigation is underway.
Loachy Puchu clarifies: The Loachy Puchu (Clan) of Yaongyimchen village has clarified that Bumei, son of late Yimtong Loachy, is a bona fide citizen of Yaongyimchen village.
In a clarification issued by Mongko and Mangkolongnyei on behalf of Loachy Puchu, Yaongyimchen village, the clan said a recent report/source had incorrectly mentioned Yachem village as Bumei’s place of origin. The clan expressed regret to the citizens of Yachem village for the incorrect reference and any confusion or misunderstanding caused by it. It requested media houses, sources and the general public to take note of the clarification and make the necessary corrections in their records and future publications.
Organizations condemn
Several student and youth organisations have condemned the incident and demanded a thorough investigation, strict legal action.
DNSU: Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed grief and strongly condemned the road accident that claimed the lives of two students of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability.
According to DNSU, the two students were taking a stroll along the roadside when they were reportedly struck by a Gypsy allegedly driven by Bumei Phom (25).
The union urged the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and ensure that the person responsible was held accountable and justice served.
DNSU extended condolences to the bereaved families, friends, classmates, teachers and the entire Don Bosco community. “Two innocent lives lost. Two futures cut short. Justice must prevail,” it said.
WNYF: Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has expressed grief over the death of two students of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, and demanded a fair and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
According to WNYF president Neisapa Soho and general secretary Imtirong Amri, the students were struck by a Maruti Gypsy while walking along the roadside, and it was alleged that the vehicle subsequently ran over them after the initial impact.
Describing the circumstances as disturbing, WNYF called upon the police and concerned authorities to establish the facts through a thorough and impartial investigation. It said if negligence, reckless driving or deliberate intent was established, the strongest appropriate legal action should be taken against those responsible.
The front also urged the competent authority to provide due compensation and necessary assistance to the bereaved families at the earliest. WNYF said there should be no compromise, dilution of the case or attempt to shield anyone responsible, adding that the law should take its full course. The organisation expressed solidarity with the bereaved families during the difficult time.
ZYOD: Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur (ZYOD) has strongly condemned the death of two Zeliangrong youths in a road accident on August 29, allegedly due to rash and negligent driving, and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.
ZYOD president Idizeung Reunim and general secretary Rampau Haining said the vehicle was allegedly driven by Bumei Phom (25) son of Yamthong Phom, Longleng district, presently residing at Mao Colony, Burma Camp, Dimapur. It said another individual involved in the incident was absconding.
ZYOD described the incident as a reckless act that had claimed two precious lives and said such disregard for human life was intolerable.
The organisation conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with them, praying for eternal rest for the departed.
It urged law-enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible were given befitting punishment under the law without bias or delay. It also demanded strict enforcement of measures to curb rash driving and prevent similar tragedies.
ZYOD appealed to the Zeliangrong community to maintain peace and allow the law to take its course.
TYOD: Tenyimi Youth Organisation Dimapur (TYOD) has strongly condemned the death of two students of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, in a road accident and urged authorities to ensure swift justice and strengthen road-safety measures in the city.
According to TYOD, the students were returning home after a futsal game when they were struck by a vehicle driven by Bumei Phom.
Describing the incident as tragic and disturbing, TYOD said reckless driving and disregard for human life could not be tolerated. It expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the Don Bosco community.
The organisation urged law-enforcement authorities to conduct a swift, thorough and impartial investigation and ensure that the person responsible was brought to justice and dealt with according to law.
TYOD also called for immediate measures to prevent recurring road accidents, including strict enforcement of traffic rules, monitoring of reckless driving, control of speeding and strengthening of road-safety measures across Dimapur.

ZLSU: Zeliang Students’ Union, Nagaland (ZLSU) has strongly condemned the death of two Don Bosco Higher Secondary School students in a road accident in Dimapur and demanded a thorough criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
ZLSU president Roland Zeliang and secretary Keyinreulu Nren said the students were taking a stroll along the roadside when they were struck by a Maruti Gypsy. It alleged that the vehicle subsequently ran over the students after they had fallen to the ground following the initial impact.
The union said the circumstances raised serious concerns and should not be treated merely as a routine road accident. It called upon the police and law-enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and uncompromising investigation to establish exactly what had occurred and whether there was any deliberate intent.
It demanded that all appropriate and stringent charges be invoked based on the evidence and that a strong charge-sheet be filed against those responsible if deliberate intent was established.
The union also urged the competent authority to provide compensation to the victims’ families under the Victim Compensation Scheme and other applicable laws at the earliest.
It said there should be no dilution of the case, compromise or attempt to shield anyone responsible, adding that those found guilty must face the strongest punishment permissible under law.
The union expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, saying justice was necessary to ensure that the deaths of the two students were not forgotten and those responsible were held accountable.
RSON: Rongmei Students’ Organization Nagaland (RSON) has strongly condemned the reported hit-and-run incident that claimed the lives of two students of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, and called for a thorough investigation and swift justice.
RSON president Kambuiga Rongmei expressed condolences to the bereaved families and shared in their grief over the loss of the two young lives.
RSON urged law-enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and take strict legal action against the person responsible for the incident. It also called for befitting punishment in accordance with law and swift justice for the bereaved families.

ZSUN: Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) has strongly condemned the death of two Don Bosco Higher Secondary School students in a road accident at Burma Camp, Dimapur, on August 29 and demanded a thorough investigation and strict legal action against those responsible.
ZSUN president Edward Nring and assistant general secretary Witenthui¬bo Chawang urged the State government and concerned departments to take the incident seriously and conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. It also called for strict monitoring and enforcement against drunk and reckless driving to prevent similar incidents.
The union urged the authorities to identify and apprehend all those involved without delay and take strict legal action against the culprits, saying justice must be delivered to the victims and their bereaved families.
ZSUN expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the Zeliangrong community during the period of grief.
