DIMAPUR: A series of science exhibitions, academic workshops and student programmes were organised across Nagaland during August 2026, highlighting innovation, sustainability, research and youth engagement.
At Jalukie, the Zeme Baptist Church Council (ZBCC) in collaboration with Kendeu Coaching Centre (KCC) hosted the Science Exhibition 2026 under the theme “Harnessing Science for a Sustainable Future” at Baptist High School.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Peidoding, Headmaster, Christian School Jalukie, and included prayers, addresses and student presentations. Hiazu Meru, Deputy Commissioner, Peren, in his address, described the exhibition as a celebration of human ingenuity, urging students to persevere through failures and embrace experimentation. He identified education, healthcare and the economy as key challenges for the district, while stressing the importance of entrepreneurship beyond government jobs.
Meru further expressed concern over logging and rapid urbanisation affecting Jalukie’s identity as the “Rice Bowl of Nagaland” and Peren’s recognition as the “Green District of Nagaland.” He called upon students to harness science and innovation to build a sustainable future.
Competitions were held alongside the exhibition. “Air to Grow” of BHSS Jalukie B won first prize in the science exhibition, while Kilamle of BHS Jalukie topped the elocution contest. In extempore, Samzai Newme of BHS Jalukie secured first place. The programme concluded with a prayer by Ariebe Hingleu.
Meanwhile, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), Chümoukedima–Seithekema, organised its Science Exhibition 2026 under the theme “Science Beyond Limits” at the Bundrock-Chapel Auditorium.
The programme began with a prayer by Rev. Dr. Vichükho Ngukha, followed by a welcome address from Dr. Thokchom Devala Devi, Dean of Sciences. In his keynote, Dr. Thepfuvilie Pierü, principal, emphasised that science begins with questions and urged students to remain curious, learn from failures and take responsibility for society. He reminded participants that innovative solutions to challenges such as climate change, healthcare and energy may arise from the imagination of young people.
Special guest, Obed Bohovi Swu, Divisional Forest Officer, Zunheboto, encouraged students to move beyond conventional approaches and cultivate the habit of asking fundamental questions. He stressed the need for practical, sustainable solutions to environmental concerns.
The highlight was the Science Model Making Competition, where students presented working models. PM SHRI Government Higher Secondary School, Chümoukedima won first prize, followed by the Department of Mathematics, PCC and North Town Higher Secondary School, Chümoukedima. The exhibition concluded with prize distribution and a call to nurture scientific curiosity and innovation.
At Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma, the Department of Chemistry conducted a three-day lecture workshop on “Recent Advances in Chemical Sciences (RACS-2026)” from August 27–29.
Organised under the Science Academies’ Education Programme, the workshop brought together eminent scientists from IISc Bengaluru, JNCASR Bengaluru and IIT Delhi. Resource persons delivered lectures on contemporary themes, exposing students and researchers to current methodologies and challenges.
The valedictory function featured reflections from participants and resource persons. Dr. Daniel Kibami, Organising Coordinator, highlighted the enthusiastic participation and collective efforts that ensured success. Prof. Balaji R. Jagirdar, IISc Bengaluru, appreciated the initiative and encouraged students to cultivate scientific curiosity and pursue research with perseverance. The programme concluded with remarks by Prof. Limatemjen, Dean of Academics, and a vote of thanks by Prof. K. K. Tiwari.
Separately, the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, held its 12th Fresher’s Day on August 12 at BAM Hall to welcome newly admitted students of BSW and MSW programmes.
Lt. Col. Prachetan Gahatraj, Commanding Officer, 24 Nagaland Battalion NCC, as chief guest, emphasised discipline, confidence, fitness and perseverance as keys to success. He urged students to set clear goals, remain resilient in setbacks and contribute meaningfully to society.
Earlier, Dr. Fr. C. P. Anto, principal, welcomed the freshers, describing their entry into NEISSR as the beginning of a journey of transformation and service. Drawing from his own fieldwork experience, he highlighted the importance of direct community engagement in shaping social workers’ perspectives.
The programme included songs, performances and reflections from students, reaffirming NEISSR’s commitment to nurturing competent, compassionate and socially responsible professionals.
Modern College, Piphema, in collaboration with Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya, Golaghat, Assam, organised an inter departmental art and craft competition on August 28 under the theme “Voices of Tradition: Preserving Indigenous Knowledge through Art and Craft.” The event aimed to encourage creativity, artistic expression and healthy competition among students, while raising awareness on the preservation of indigenous knowledge, traditional practices and cultural heritage.
Delivering the special address, Prof. G. Singaiah, Vice Chancellor, stressed the need to preserve traditional culture and heritage for future generations. He urged students to learn, practise and promote indigenous knowledge and cultural traditions.
Dr. Prem Bora later spoke on the Indian Knowledge System, with particular reference to Yoga and traditional Indian architecture. He encouraged students to value and preserve India’s rich knowledge traditions.
In the competition, Ameka Shohe and Keneinguzo, B.A. 1st semester, Department of Political Science, secured first position, while Atho and Kevisekho ü, B.A. 1st semester, Department of Economics, secured second position.
On the occasion, Modern College, Piphema, and Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalised by Prof. G. Singaiah and Dr. Vitso Yahno, principal of Modern College.
The programme concluded with students showcasing their artistic talents, exchanging creative ideas and gaining deeper appreciation of indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage. The event highlighted art and craft as important tools for creativity, education and cultural preservation.
