Meghalaya showcases NE culture at Delhi FW

Meghalaya’s handloom traditions, indigenous textiles and cultural heritage took centre stage at Delhi Fashion Week (FW) 2026 at ITPO, Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with a special showcase highlighting the state’s creative talent and weaving traditions.
The presentation was part of International Reinvent Northeast – Season 8, an initiative of Delhi Fashion Club aimed at promoting the handloom, textiles, artisans, designers, entrepreneurs, women and cultural heritage of Northeast India.
The initiative was led by Celebrity Fashion Director, Chairman of Delhi Fashion Club and Founder of Delhi Fashion Week, Harshit Dhingaun. Popular across Meghalaya and the Northeast as “TheVOY – Voice of Youth”, Dhingaun has built a digital following with more than 10 million YouTube views and over 300,000 subscribers.
The Meghalaya collection was presented by Shillong-based designer Batkyntilin Mawthou and weaver Iaineh from Ri-Bhoi district. The collection featured Ryndia silk, showcasing the traditional weaving heritage of Meghalaya through contemporary fashion while retaining its indigenous character.
The showcase sought to highlight the craftsmanship of Meghalaya’s weavers and the potential of indigenous textiles to access wider markets through fashion, design and creative entrepreneurship.
Celebrity dancer and performer Kanchan Chakma, associated with Sony Entertainment Television’s Super Dancer Chapter 5, added glamour to the presentation as the showstopper for the Ryndia silk collection.
Beyond fashion, the programme highlighted Meghalaya’s cultural identity and the traditions of its Khasi, Garo and Jaintia communities. The presentation sought to demonstrate how traditional craftsmanship and contemporary fashion can complement each other while creating opportunities for artisans and entrepreneurs.
The initiative also brought together models and cultural representatives from different parts of Northeast India. A special Manipuri dance performance added a cultural dimension to the event, showcasing the region’s performing arts on the Bharat Mandapam stage.
The organisers said the showcase aimed to provide greater visibility to Northeast designers, weavers, artisans and entrepreneurs by connecting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary markets and audiences.
The event also highlighted the role of women in preserving traditional crafts and promoting creative entrepreneurship, with women designers, weavers, models and cultural representatives participating in the programme.
Through Ryndia silk, traditional attire and indigenous craftsmanship, the showcase also sought to promote Meghalaya’s cultural and tourism identity, linking handloom and fashion with cultural tourism.
International Reinvent Northeast – Season 8 was supported and sponsored by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), with the support of the Northeast Council (NEC) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India.
The initiative also connected with Meghalaya’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, including PRIME Meghalaya – Promotion and Incubation of Market-driven Enterprises, which supports entrepreneurship, incubation and market opportunities.
The showcase was organised under Delhi Fashion Week 2026 by Delhi Fashion Club in collaboration with Film Expo India and in association with NEHHDC. The event was executed by VOY Media & Events and directed by Dhingaun.
The organisers said the presentation offered a national platform for Meghalaya’s weavers, textiles, culture and creative talent, demonstrating how traditional heritage can find new expression through contemporary fashion.
