Guwahati, Sep 1 (PTI): The Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress on Tuesday inaugurated its new state headquarters in Guwahati and announced that the party would contest the by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
The office was inaugurated by the party’s Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal, Nadimul Haque, and Assam Pradesh TMC in-charge president and MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed.
An organisational meeting attended by nearly 300 party workers was held, and it was formally announced that the TMC would contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, a party statement said. Addressing reporters after the meeting, Ahmed said the party workers were always ready to serve the people. Ahmed said distribution of application forms has started from the new office and interested aspirants have been requested to collect and submit the forms by September 5.
“At present, the country and the state are suffering from misgovernance of the BJP. People are looking for a strong alternative against both BJP and Congress, and this time that alternative will be Trinamool,” he added.
The MLA said TMC’s main plank in the election battle will be struggle for rights of indigenous people and their burning problems.
A bypoll in Nagaon Lok Sabha seat has been necessitated after former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party just days before the Assam assembly elections to join the BJP. He won from Dispur assembly constituency to become an MLA.
