SHILLONG, SEP 3 (NPN): Meghalaya produced another impressive performance, defeating Maharashtra 3-0 in their second Group C match of the Junior Boys National Football Championship 2026-27 (Tier 1) for the Dr BC Roy Trophy in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Adriel B Nongbet scored twice in the 18th and 47th minutes, while Habankhlur Lyngdoh Mawnai added the third in the 52nd minute to seal a comprehensive victory for Meghalaya.
Coach Playerson Jitem Syiemlieh retained the same starting XI that secured a 2-1 victory over Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
Meghalaya took the lead in the 18th minute after a clearance from their own half fell into Maharashtra territory. Adriel raced onto the ball while being closely marked by Krishna Acharya. The Meghalaya forward managed to get around the defender and hooked the ball into the net to give his side the advantage.
Meghalaya doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Habankhlur’s cross from the left sailed deep into the box, prompting the Maharashtra goalkeeper to come out and attempt a punch. However, the ball fell directly to Adriel, who made no mistake with his header to register his third goal of the tournament.
Five minutes later, Habankhlur got on the scoresheet himself.
Aibannangkhraw Kharumnuid, positioned outside the box, appeared to be preparing for a long-range effort before cleverly opting to pass to an unmarked Habankhlur on the left. The latter calmly guided the ball past Maharashtra goalkeeper Garv Singh to complete the scoring.
Meghalaya will face Mizoram in their final Group C match on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. Mizoram currently have six points, level with Meghalaya, after thrashing Tamil Nadu 7-0 earlier on Thursday. Mizoram, however, lead the group on goal difference (+9 to +4).
With only the group winners advancing to the semifinals, Meghalaya must secure a victory against Mizoram to progress to the knockout stage.
