DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): Teacher’s Day 2026 was celebrated across Nagaland on September 5 with programmes organised by District Education Offices highlighting the pivotal role of teachers in shaping society.
Director, Food & Civil Supplies, Warren Holohon Yepthomi, on Saturday underscored the crucial role of teachers in moulding children into responsible and compassionate human beings.
Speaking as special guest at the Common Teachers’ Day Celebration 2026, organised by District Education Office (DEO) Dimapur in collaboration with All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) Dimapur Unit at Greenwood School Auditorium, Kuda Village, Yepthomi congratulated the four award recipients, stating that their recognition reflected dedication not only to teaching but also to wider responsibilities. He encouraged other teachers to emulate their example.
Describing teaching as a profession with the power to transform lives, Yepthomi said teachers interacted with children at their most impressionable stage and therefore carried the responsibility of guiding them to become the best version of themselves-equipped to face challenges, discover new horizons and pursue their dreams.
He acknowledged the patience, sacrifices and creativity of teachers, including their involvement in election, census and other duties, and described teaching as a “calling” rather than merely a profession. Despite fatigue and setbacks, he said teachers continued to return to classrooms, reflecting the “quiet strength” of the profession.
Addressing wider social concerns, Yepthomi maintained that wholesome education was key to tackling corruption and stagnation in society. He stressed that children must be given opportunities to grow into mature individuals with collective responsibility.
On the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and online learning platforms, Yepthomi noted that digital tools had become useful in teaching and learning, but insisted that technology could never replace the compassion, love and human connection provided by teachers. He urged teachers to inspire rather than merely instruct, guide rather than simply correct, and teach by example.
The programme also featured cultural presentations by students from PM SHRI GHS Naharbari, PM SHRI GHS Thahekhu, GMS Phaipijang and Footprints Academy. Lyvia N. Chophi of Christian Higher Secondary School presented “Salute to the Nation Builders”.
Earlier, DEO Dimapur Y. Mughaho Zhimo delivered the welcome address, while SBI RBO Dimapur regional manager Rajiv Roy gave a short speech. Chandeno Ezong, G/T GHSS Purana Bazar, spoke on behalf of the award recipients. Invocation was offered by Greenwood School chaplain Kevinguzo, acknowledgments by Nilokato Shohe, AEO, Sr. SDEO Dimapur, and benediction by Nivukhu V. Jimo, pastor, Sumi Baptist Church Purana Bazar. The programme was compered by Ilitoli Sema, GMS Lhomithi, and Benson Sitlhou, Greenwood School. The celebration was co sponsored by SBI RBO Dimapur and Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU).
Mokokchung: The 64th Teachers’ Day celebration and felicitation of awardees was held at the conference hall of Hotel Whispering Winds, organised by Ao Students’ Conference (AKM). The programme also witnessed the presentation of District Teachers’ Awards by the office of the DEO Mokokchung.
Speaking on behalf of the district administration, EAC headquarters Kewimesin said that in today’s technology driven world, especially in the age of artificial intelligence, machines cannot replace the human relationship between teachers and students. She urged that education must remain inclusive and meaningful, even as technology advances. Acknowledging AKM for organising the programme, she assured that the district administration remained committed to the welfare of teachers, students and the education department in improving the quality of education in Mokokchung.
She posed thought provoking questions: “Are we merely preparing students to pass examinations or are we preparing them for their future? Are we only preparing them for government jobs or for becoming responsible citizens?” She stressed that these challenges require collective effort beyond government initiatives. Congratulating the awardees, she said the honours reflected years of hard work, responsibility and influence in society. She concluded by challenging teachers to continue inspiring students, while urging students to respect their teachers and make the most of what they learn.
The District Teachers’ Award recipients were: Kangabam Rajenkumar Singh, GT-GHS Longjang; Pusumenla Pongener, TGT-Assam Rifles School, Mokokchung; Sentimenla, GT-PM Shri Mayangnokcha GHSS, Mokokchung and Shiluyongdang, Head Teacher- GMS Chungtiayimsen. The programme also featured short speeches by DEO Mokokchung and ANPSA Mokokchung Unit. On behalf of the awardees, Pusumenla Pongener delivered a brief speech expressing gratitude.
Wokha: District Education Department celebrated Teacher’s Day at VDB Hall, Wokha, with Deputy Commissioner K. Mhathung Tsanglao gracing the occasion as special guest. In his address, Tsanglao described teachers as the “silent architects” of society, stressing their role as filters of authentic knowledge in an age of digital information. He emphasized that teaching must go beyond textbooks, adding that a “human touch” remains essential even in the era of artificial intelligence. He also urged teachers to extend their role beyond professional duties by ensuring good parenting in nurturing children. District Teachers’ Awards were conferred on Thungdemo Humtsoe (GHSS Bhandari), L. Yanbeni Murry (GMS Wokha Town D), N. Longshibeni Ngullie (GPS Saron Wokha), and Jennifer Tsanglao (Isiah Ability Higher Secondary School). The programme featured performances by Libemo Memorial School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, and GMS Wokha Town D and B. Senior SDEO Wokha, Nchumbemo Jami, delivered the welcome address, while the programme was chaired by Mercy Tungoe.
Isaiah Ability Higher Secondary School (IAHSS), Wokha also celebrated Teachers’ Day 2026 under the theme “Leading from the front” with NSF president Mteisuding Heraang gracing the occasion as guest of honour at the IAHSS compound, Wokha town.
Speaking on the occasion, Heraang lauded teachers as nation builders, describing them as the pillars and architects of the future generation. He urged teachers to keep abreast of the times and teach students beyond the curriculum and textbooks.
Sharing about the recent NSF organised two day agitation against the imposition of singing Vande Mataram in Nagaland, he appealed to students, parents and teachers to continue supporting NSF through prayers as it safeguards the faith and rights of the Naga people. He also highlighted the successfully concluded National Seminar on the importance of BEFR 1873 held on August 28-29 at Dimapur Town Hall under the initiative of the Inner Line Regulation Commission of NSF, chaired by Senchumo NSN Lotha, where resource persons from across India participated.
The NSF president further informed about the representation submitted to the Nagaland Chief Secretary on July 28, urging enactment of the Nagaland Non Governmental Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fees) Act to monitor and regulate fees in private schools and colleges.
IAHSS principal Senchumo Lotha delivered a short note, while SME CNY director Eyilobeni R. Kikon offered a prayer of blessing for teachers. Earlier, invocation was said by Class 12 student Chanchibeni Y. Kikon, welcome address was delivered by IAHSS administrator Mhalo Ovung, and Class 9 students presented a welcome song. Class 12 students presented a special number, while chief prefect Meriyani Ngullie delivered a speech on behalf of the students. The formal programme was chaired by Class 11 student Longshibeni N. Kikon.
Tseminyu: Tseminyu district observed Teachers’ Day-cum-Teachers’ Award 2026 at Christian School, Tseminyu, with Deputy Commissioner Japhet Woch, as special guest.
The programme commenced with invocation by Yhunthonglo Khing, pastor TTBC and president CRBC, followed by a welcome address from Visasielie Suhu, SDEO i/c DEO Tseminyu.
Addressing the gathering, Woch highlighted the importance of punctuality, discipline and silence in the learning environment. Referring to the school bell as one of the most important sounds in a school, he said it teaches students the value of punctuality and discipline, while silence in the classroom creates a conducive atmosphere for learning. He stressed that proper time management and adherence to schedules contribute significantly towards achieving one’s goals.
On the teaching profession, the DC acknowledged that teaching is not an easy responsibility, requiring thorough preparation before entering the classroom. He said the profession is demanding but meaningful, as teachers’ efforts ultimately contribute to the welfare and development of students. He added that teachers often play multiple roles in the lives of students-like parents, church leaders and community guides-while instilling values and guiding them on the right path. He concluded by appreciating the dedication and service of teachers in shaping future generations.
A special prayer for teachers was offered by Rev. Haiwalo Apon, ES, CRBC Zunpha. The programme also featured presentation of citations to teachers in recognition of their achievements. Hitilo Kath, GT, GHSS Tseminyu, was felicitated for receiving the State Teachers’ Award. Tseminyu District Teachers’ Award was conferred on Sogwalo Magh, PT, GPS Sewanu, and Sosinle Kent, GT, DBS Tseminyu. Special presentations, tributes and songs marked the day’s observance. Words of gratitude were delivered by Chegeseng Kath, Headmaster, GHS Tseminyu New Town.
The event concluded with appreciation for the teaching community and recognition of their continued commitment to educating, guiding and shaping the younger generation.
Longleng: At VDB/VCC Hall, Longleng, Teacher’s Day was celebrated with Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom, as special guest. Organised by the District Education Office in collaboration with SBI Longleng Branch, the programme began with invocation by associate pastor Bachem Phom.
In his address, Manpai said the celebration honoured the sacrifices and dedicated efforts of teachers, noting that India observes Teacher’s Day on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. He congratulated teachers recognised by the State Government for their exemplary service, and urged the teaching fraternity to discharge their duties with sincerity and dedication to ensure progress of society. District Teacher Awards were presented, while highlights included special numbers by Vision Val School and “Ode to the Teachers” by Monglem Phom of GMS Pupei. The programme was chaired by IE Coordinator DMA Longleng, A. Ainyu Phom, with vote of thanks by Sr. SDEO & DEO in-charge Longleng, K. Huqheto Chishi, and benediction by N. Hongthai Phom.
Tuensang: Teacher’s Day was celebrated at Town Hall Tuensang with Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa as special guest. Organised by DEO Tuensang, the DC lauded teachers for their dedication, stating that only teachers truly understand the sufferings of students and must provide a safe environment for learning. She encouraged schools to introduce early childhood education to strengthen cognitive and social foundations, and urged teachers to upgrade themselves with technological knowledge in the computerized era.
The programme featured presentations by GHSS Hakushang, Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Holy Angel School and Tulip Residency Academy. Teachers from GMS Station II were honoured, while District Teachers’ Awards were presented. Invocation was offered by Yambe Pastor, Mupüng Baptist Church, with special prayer by Rev. Sangkap, pastor TTBL, vote of thanks by Tiarenla Sangtam, Sr. SDEO Tuensang, and benediction by Tsathingla, Women Pastor, Sangtam Baptist Church.
Niuland: The Common Teacher’s Day Programme was held at Aqo Ki, Niuland Town, with Deputy Commissioner T.L. Kiusumong Tikhir, as special guest. Addressing the gathering, the DC emphasized that society’s progress is directly linked to the dedication of teachers, describing them as sculptors who carefully shape students for nation-building. “We are what we are today because of our teachers,” he stated. The event brought together teachers and officials from across the district to celebrate and acknowledge the vital role of educators.
Meluri: Meluri district held its second Teachers’ Day celebration since attaining full-fledged district status at EBRC Hall, SDEO Office, Meluri. The Meluri District Teachers’ Award 2026 was conferred on Thozuvi Kajiri, Primary Teacher, GPS Akhegwo, and Kusi M. Yitsuthu, Head Teacher, GMS Zhipu. Kajiri was recognised for his long service, high attendance, free tuition and efforts to prevent dropouts, while Yitsuthu was honoured for her academic contribution, with her students securing 100% pass in PSLC examinations in 2024 (Phek) and 2025 (Meluri). Dy. Director, DoSE and SDEO (Additional Charge), Meluri, Kaitunchap Newmai, stressed the importance of NIPUN Nagaland in ensuring foundational literacy and numeracy by Class 3.
Peren: The district-level celebration was held at Peren Town Hall, hosted by DEO Peren, Sr. SDEO Peren, SDEO Tening, and PM Shri State Government Schools and GHSS under the district. Special guest Enchang Hiakha, General Secretary, Nagaland Zeliang Peoples Organization, emphasized the importance of teachers in individual and societal development. Limadangit Jamir delivered the welcome address, highlighting Teachers’ Day as an occasion to recognise the commitment and responsibility of teachers.
NEISSR: North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) observed the day with a programme centred on gratitude for teaching, Peace Channel and non-teaching staff. HOD Dr. Toli H. Kiba reflected on the role of teachers in shaping students, encouraging them to embrace questions and learn from failures. Speaking on behalf of faculty, Vizosü Kikhi delivered a light-hearted address, comparing teaching styles to “operating systems” and reminding students that challenges posed by teachers are meant to strengthen them.
Shamator: St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Shamator, celebrated Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm. Col. G. P. Singh, speaking on the occasion, thanked teachers for their selfless efforts in nurturing future leaders and stressed their role in imparting knowledge, discipline, values and confidence. He urged students to respect teachers, work hard and grow into responsible citizens.
Ram Janaki Hr Sec School: Students of Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School observed the day with cultural performances including dances, musical presentations, fancy dress and drama, followed by tokens of appreciation for teaching and non-teaching staff.
Phek: Teachers’ Day was celebrated at Government High School, Phek Village, with members of Phek Village Council, Phek Students’ Union and SMDC teams attending the programme.
