DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): The 78 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), organised a 10-km Zubza Mini Marathon on September 5, under the national framework of the SPANDAN Khelo India Scheme, with the theme “Sports for Peace and Development”.
The event, aimed at promoting community harmony, youth empowerment and fitness witnessed more than 200 athletes and citizens from Kohima district and other parts of Nagaland participated in the run, which also sought to spread awareness against drug abuse.
The marathon was flagged off by Commissioner, Government of Nagaland, Thejawelie Gregory as chief guest in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, Kevileto Nisa, Col. Joseph of 17 Assam Rifles, senior CRPF officials and local village council elders.
Addressing the gathering, Gregory appreciated the initiative and highlighted the role of sports in promoting peace, unity and a healthy society. He said SPANDAN was not merely about competition but about building a drug-free and progressive future, adding that sporting activities could bring communities together and promote national integration.
The 10-km highway route was regulated by CRPF and State Police personnel to ensure safety and fair competition. Runners were verified through a wrist-token system at the 5-km U-turn point, while medical booths and hydration stations were placed at 2.5-km intervals along the route.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony at the Battalion Parade Ground. Shiangjiu T. Khiamniungan secured first place and received a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and a gold medal. Lhiti Lasuh finished second and was awarded Rs. 6,000 and a silver medal, while Takasanen Longkumer secured third place and received Rs. 4,000 and a bronze medal. The top finishers were also presented merit certificates.
SuhluvoIu Shijo was awarded a special cash prize and participation certificate for being the first woman to finish the race.
All registered participants who completed the marathon were presented commemorative event T-shirts and refreshment kits in recognition of their participation and sportsmanship.
Speaking at the conclusion of the event, the Commandant of 78 Bn CRPF expressed gratitude to the local youth clubs, administration, medical teams and other stakeholders for their support in successfully conducting the marathon.
He said the mini marathon marked the beginning of a week-long sports celebration under SPANDAN, which will include the SPANDAN Women’s Volleyball Tournament, scheduled to be held from September 7 to 10 in Dimapur.
The Commandant also announced that a State-level marathon would be organised next month, featuring 60 prizes across three age categories—18 to 30 years, 30 to below 45 years, and 45 years and above—for both men and women.
In each category, the first, second and third position holders will receive cash prizes of Rs. 30,000, Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000, respectively.
