DIMAPUR: Assam Rifles carried out a series of community oriented programmes across Nagaland from September 2-4, reaffirming its ethos of “Service Before Self” and its commitment to community welfare, youth empowerment, environmental conservation and civil–military cooperation.
On September 4, Assam Rifles conducted a community outreach programme at Old Ngaulong Lodhi village, Tening Sub Division, Peren district. Organised in collaboration with CHC Tening, the initiative provided essential medical assistance to the village council and distributed sports items to encourage youth participation in recreational activities. Around 80 villagers, including members of the village administration, attended the programme. The medical outreach offered basic healthcare services and facilitated meaningful interaction with the local community. A dedicated awareness session was also held on personal hygiene, sanitation, prevention of seasonal diseases and the importance of timely medical care. The distribution of sports items aimed to promote teamwork, physical fitness and healthy engagement among local youth.
On the same day, Assam Rifles organised its Annual Health Screening and Medical Check up for students of Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS), Chieswema. A total of 45 students benefited from the initiative, which assessed general health parameters, conducted physical examinations and identified health concerns requiring further attention. Students were sensitised on personal hygiene, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate rest and healthy lifestyle practices. Emphasis was laid on early identification of health issues and the importance of regular monitoring during formative years. The programme reaffirmed Assam Rifles’ commitment to the welfare and holistic development of children.
Earlier, on September 2, Assam Rifles conducted an awareness lecture on hygiene and sanitation at Chendang village. Personnel sensitised villagers on safe drinking water practices, water purification methods, household hygiene and proper waste management. Preventive measures against water borne and communicable diseases were highlighted, encouraging the community to adopt healthy sanitation practices. The initiative provided an opportunity for meaningful interaction between Assam Rifles and local residents, fostering collective responsibility towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
In another humanitarian effort, Assam Rifles personnel rescued three local residents stranded in the overflowing Phuzutsu Nala at Mimi following continuous rainfall. Acting swiftly upon receiving information, troops rushed to the site with a JCB to assess the situation and undertake the rescue operation. Despite strong water currents posing serious risks, the personnel safely evacuated the stranded individuals from their vehicle and successfully recovered it. The timely intervention averted a potentially serious incident and once again demonstrated Assam Rifles’ commitment to extending immediate humanitarian assistance during emergencies.
Assam Rifles visited Gasper and Immanuel Children’s Home, Shamator, engaging with children through motivational interactions. Personnel shared inspiring experiences and stories highlighting courage, discipline, perseverance and dedication. The visit aimed at instilling confidence and a positive outlook among the children, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations with determination. The warm interaction strengthened the bond of trust and goodwill between Assam Rifles and the local community.
Assam Rifles also conducted a cleanliness and Swachhata drive at Wangti village, Mon district, on September 2, 2026, with active participation from the local community.
The initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness, hygiene and environmental responsibility among residents. Local villagers, Village Guards and Assam Rifles personnel collectively undertook cleaning activities in and around the village, contributing towards maintaining a clean, hygienic and healthy environment.
During the drive, the importance of cleanliness, proper waste disposal and maintaining hygiene in daily life was highlighted. Participants were encouraged to adopt responsible waste management practices and contribute towards keeping their surroundings clean on a sustained basis. The programme also provided an opportunity for Assam Rifles personnel and the local community to work together towards a common social cause, thereby strengthening mutual trust, cooperation and community spirit.
Further, a tree plantation drive was conducted across Akhen, Ziphu, Avangkhu and New Thewati in Meluri district. A total of 1,114 saplings were planted with active participation from 273 community members. The initiative promoted environmental awareness, conservation and sustainable practices, while sensitising participants on the long term benefits of tree plantation for soil conservation, ecological balance and preservation of the environment. Local residents were encouraged to nurture the saplings through regular care and protection.
