Dimapur is under tremendous pressure from a severe to massive market collapse with people and business still recuperating from the devastating 2020-21 nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, added by the ever increasing underground factions who demand illegal taxes or impose armed extortions. Besides, there are also some overground organizations like NGOs, student unions and common miscreants who are either directly or indirectly involved in destabilizing the smooth functions of market and business operations.
Naga public and business communities are heavily burdened due to multiple taxations from National Workers so, what public don’t want anymore are problems from school/college going Student Unions who regularly indulge in covert money extractions from both local and non-local businessmen through arm twist tactics. It is done on the pretext of asking “donations” from a businessman, that is, if the donation is not given then the businessman is confronted. Such modus operandi of student leaders is silently cracking the very backbone and foundations of business establishments in Dimapur. And these undisciplined and misguided activities of students leaders must stop at once and concerned authority, parents or elders must also keep a curb on them. Because student leaders or CSOs are not supposed to take part in unlawful activities and take law in their own hands but instead raise alarm and awareness on any anti-social elements and alert and inform the law keepers or concerned authority.
However, the worst factor that is crippling the daily business activities of Dimapur is because of the presence of countless unidentified common miscreants who are usually imposters of Naga National Workers. These imposters or miscreants intimidate and threaten business owners and demand unauthorized tax in the name of various factions and local bodies. Street Vendors/hawkers and small shop to big shop owners are facing severe harassments and disturbance at the hands of such miscreants.
Regardless of facing such untold hardships from miscreants, business owners who are particularly victimised seldom report such matters to police as nobody wants more trouble. Then with the Dimapur market in such a dire condition where so many criminals/miscreants/extortionists are making a free run-no businessman wants to put extra capital and expand; no financer wants to invest and most importantly, no employments are generated for local youths.
Thus, in such a depleting market scenario who will invest or do business in Dimapur, the commercial capital of Nagaland?
Security and protection to market are of paramount importance for any Economic prosperity and capital growth. In this regard police must work better and harder in co-ordination with the public so as to instil confidence and sense of security in the minds of business communities. No doubt, the Dimapur Police Commissionerate was introduced circa 2016 with additional police personnel to prevent and control such high crime rate in Dimapur district but so far public are yet to see much progress in crime suppression.
Therefore, on behalf of the business communities and citizens, I earnestly appeal to our Honourable Chief Minister and His Excellency Governor of Nagaland to kindly review the security situation and give top priority to provide fool proof security and additional assistance to local authorities and law enforcers of Dimapur district.
Elwin Yesca, Dimapur
