DIMAPUR: A culvert along NH 702 in Mon Town, which had remained blocked with mud and debris following a mudslide for nearly three weeks, was finally cleared on Tuesday through the voluntary efforts of the Red Cross team and local citizens.
According to Concerned Citizens, Mon Town, the blockage had caused rainwater to overflow onto the highway, resulting in flooding and inconvenience to nearby residents. Although the matter was brought to the attention of the administration, the proposed JCB assistance required the public to bear fuel expenses, and the arrangement could not be carried out.
The issue was later taken up with the Red Cross Team, which promptly stepped forward to help. The culvert was cleared in about four hours, providing immediate relief to the area.
Meanwhile, the public expressed gratitude to Lucy, Red Cross member, for providing the JCB, and to Nyamto Wangsa, secretary of the Red Cross Society Mon, for taking the initiative and coordinating the work. The public also appreciated to all who contributed their time and effort. The incident underscored the need for timely maintenance of culverts and drainage systems along highways, especially during the monsoon season, to prevent flooding and safeguard residents.
