ASU calls off boycott against KCK

Following the reported assurance of Higher Education minister Dr. Shurzhozelie Liezietsu to the 3-point demand of the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) relating to admission issue in Kohima College Kohima (KCK), popularly known as Arts College, the union has called off its boycott of the college.
An ASU delegation led by its president Kelhouneizo Yhome and other senior members called on Higher Education minister Dr. Shurzhozelie Liezietsu at his office chamber on Tuesday afternoon.
“During our meeting and discussion, the minister agreed to our demands and a notification would issued by Director Higher Education in this connection revoking the earlier order”, Yhome said.
“Since the government has accepted our demand, we have called off our agitation”, he added.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, hundreds of ASU volunteers gathered outside the college, carrying placards some of which read “Where’ll I study?  I cant’ afford to study in a private college. May be Assam Government college”, “Act now or resign”, “Our rights are our virtue “, “Education is not a joy ride”, “Don’t deprived the students” and “Poor students in Kohima district cannot study in other districts colleges.”
A large banner which read “Immediately implement the three -points competency demand” was also put up on the gate of the college by the volunteers.
ASU volunteers also burnt effigy of the college principal and shouted slogans and even blocked the roads adjacent to the college.
Talking to mediapersons, ASU president said the three-point demand are: students who passed HSLC from government schools should be given priority in admission, students who passed out from Kohima district should be given priority in admission and students who passed Class XII from the College be given privilege to directly get admission into BA courses.
Earlier in the day, DC Kohima convened a joint meeting with ASU, Art College authority and advisory board of the college. However, the meeting could not resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, ASU thanked all the volunteers who turned up for the agitation
