DIMAPUR, SEP 10 (NPN): The Dimapur Urban Colony Chairman Federation (DUCCF) has expressed concern over alleged unauthorised and dangerous firing of air rifles and pellet guns in urban residential areas, saying the practice threatens public safety and private property.
The federation highlighted a recent incident in which an air-rifle pellet shattered a window pane.
It struck near an occupied living space, underscoring risks posed by air weapons in densely populated areas.
DUCCF said air rifles and air pistols, though often marketed for recreational target shooting or pest control, can cause eye injuries, physical harm to bystanders and property damage when discharged in residential areas.
“Urban residential zones are not target ranges,” the federation said, describing firing near homes, children and vehicles as irresponsible and dangerous.
It urged municipal authorities, residents and colony councils to maintain vigilance and curb random shooting.
Neighbourhood councils, it said, were increasing community monitoring to identify and report people discharging air guns, air rifles or firearm-like weapons in residential areas.
Dimapur Urban Colony Chairman Federation also called for a review of gun licences and air-weapon use. Colony councils are liaising with law enforcement agencies to enforce existing arms regulations, verify firearm licensing compliance and clarify local restrictions on high-power air weapons. Residents were urged to report unauthorised shooting, stray pellets or the brandishing of air weapons to authorities or law enforcement agencies.
Local council representatives will meet law enforcement officials in the coming days to establish reporting channels and discuss enforcement protocols.
