DIMAPUR: The Central Silk Board-Research Extension Centre (CSB-REC), Dimapur, in collaboration with the Department of Sericulture, Nagaland, conducted two sericulture outreach programmes at Sangtamtila and Nagarjan villages under the initiative Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan-2.0. The programmes aimed at strengthening scientific silkworm rearing practices and promoting awareness among local farmers.
Led by Scientist-B, CSB-REC, Dr. Anitharani K V; ASO, Department of Sericulture, Mejamongla and STA, CSB-REC Dimapur, Mhayamo Murry, the programmes focused on equipping farmers with practical knowledge and field-ready techniques to improve productivity and reduce losses.
Technology demonstration at Sangtamtila: A hands-on technology demonstration was conducted to impart technical knowledge to farmers engaged in sericulture. The session covered soil sampling, host plant cultivation and the selection and application of suitable disinfectants for rearing houses and silkworms. Farmers were trained in effective bed preparation and disinfection procedures to maintain hygienic conditions. Special emphasis was placed on the correct mounting of mature silkworms, a critical stage in determining cocoon quality and yield.
Awareness programme at Nagarjan: An awareness programme was organised to introduce new farmers to the fundamentals of sericulture. The session highlighted host plant cultivation, scientific silkworm rearing methods and disinfection practices, stressing their importance in minimising silkworm diseases and ensuring successful cocoon production. Officials encouraged new farmers to adopt scientific practices from the outset to achieve better returns and sustainable livelihoods through silk farming. Both programmes formed part of ongoing efforts by CSB-REC and the Department of Sericulture to promote scientific sericulture practices among farming communities and enhance cocoon production in the region.
