LCF appeals for peace between ZUF factions

DIMAPUR, SEP 10 (NPN): The Luangdimai Citizens Forum (LCF) has made a strong appeal to both factions of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), urging them to desist from further violence and bloodshed and to embrace dialogue and reconciliation in the larger interest of the Zeliangrong/Luangdimai people.
In a statement issued by convenor of LCF, Dr. Poujenlung Gonmei and chairman of the Elder Board LCF, Dr. Samuel Pamei, stated that in separate letters addressed to Jenchui Kamei and S. Kamson, chairmen of the two ZUF groups, the Forum expressed grave concern over the cycle of armed confrontation and its impact on the community. “We earnestly appeal to both the leaders and the two organisations to listen to the ardent call for peace and reconciliation coming from the common people,” the forum stated.
Acknowledging the leadership and sacrifices of ZUF in carrying forward the political vision since the time of Haipou Jadonang and Rani Gaidinliu, the forum reminded that continued internal conflict risks diverting energies away from political, social and developmental aspirations, leaving behind wounds that may take generations to heal.
Drawing inspiration from the Chug (Sugaroumei/Thoibo) rapprochement of 1934, when the community overcame bitter conflict through dialogue and understanding, the forum stressed that peace is not a sign of weakness, nor reconciliation a surrender of principle. “The courage to sit together, listen to one another and seek a peaceful settlement is itself a mark of responsible leadership,” it noted.
The LCF outlined six key appeals to the ZUF leadership: desist from violence and armed confrontation; exercise restraint to prevent further loss of life and destruction; create conducive atmosphere by setting aside suspicion and hostility; initiate sincere dialogue to resolve differences; draw inspiration from 1934 reconciliation tradition; and prioritise unity and aspirations of the people above grievances.
The forum emphasised that the decisions taken by the leaders today will have consequences far beyond the present generation. “The common people earnestly desire to see the guns fall silent and the wounds of division begin to heal,” the appeal added.
