DIMAPUR: Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and Nagaland Police have resolved to work jointly to combat the growing menace of drugs in Mon district.
The decision was taken at a consultation meeting convened by DGP, Rupin Sharma, along with senior officers Renchamo P. Kikon, ADG (Adm), Sundeep M. Tamgadge, ADG (L&O) and others at PHQ, Kohima on September 10.
The meeting, provided a platform for extensive discussion on the prevailing law and order situation, the increasing influx of drug users and peddlers, and concerns over Mon being used as a transit route for illicit drugs.
Konyak civil society organisations emphasised the need for stronger enforcement, better intelligence coordination, preventive measures, rehabilitation and sustained community participation. KU recalled its Declaration on War Against Drugs launched in September 4, 2019, and reaffirmed its commitment despite financial challenges, pledging to collaborate closely with Nagaland Police.
One of the key issues discussed was strengthening the District Level Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) to ensure coordinated and accountable action by all departments and stakeholders.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of involving the district administration, police, village guards, Mon District Bar Association, churches, student organisations, civil society groups and the public.
It was agreed in principle that the Konyak civil society organisations and Nagaland Police will formalise their joint initiative through a MoU. DGP stressed that tackling the drug menace required strict enforcement as well as collective effort involving government, law enforcement agencies, civil society, churches, parents, educational institutions and the community.
KU appealed to the public to remain vigilant, reject drug use and trafficking, and extend cooperation to law enforcement agencies by sharing credible information.
