DIMAPUR: A two day Specialized Training for Mathematics and Science Teachers under the Learning Enhancement Programme (LEP) for PM SHRI School Nagaland commenced at SIEMAT SCERT, Kohima on September 15. The training was organised by the Department of School Education, Nagaland.
Addressing the teachers, Dr. Kevizakie Rio, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Nagaland, said PM SHRI School Nagaland was exemplary as its performance is directly monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office. He urged teachers to be sincere in their duties, noting that Nagaland has recorded the poorest results in mathematics and science according to the National Achievement Survey.
He attributed this to students’ fear of the subjects, leading to neglect and poor performance.
Dr. Rio expressed hope that the training would be a fruitful interactive session, helping students perform better as LEP is implemented across PM SHRI Schools in the state. He explained that the training would identify class IX and X mathematics and science teachers to address subject specific learning gaps, and students would be identified through academic assessments and board examination performances.
He further informed that the training would focus on identifying foundational and conceptual learning gaps, strengthening core concepts, subject specific remedial strategies, learner centred and activity based teaching approaches, development of supplementary learning resources, and improving problem solving and analytical skills for Class X board preparation.
Dr. Prochete Mallik, co founder & principal scientist, ThinkTac, spoke on the training overview, highlighting ThinkTac’s work with schools in the North East and North Bengal. He emphasised that hands on activities from a young age enrich skills and creativity, enabling students to innovate and build with ease.
He informed that the two day training would cover 24 science topics and 10 mathematics topics through hands on activities, formal sessions and teacher presentations, a DIPR report stated.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Bijano Murry, joint mission director, Samagra Shiksha & SNO PM SHRI Nagaland, who also delivered the welcome address. Resource persons included Dr. Prochete Mallik, Gopinath, Kakoli and Priyanshu from ThinkTac.
The training was attended by 48 government teachers from 21 PM SHRI Schools across Nagaland.
