DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): The 12th edition of the Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup officially commenced on Tuesday in Meluri, commemorating the sacrifices of the Pochury martyrs and reaffirming the spirit of unity, remembrance and brotherhood among the Naga people.
The opening match saw Shilloi FC defeat Reguri Sporting Club in a thrilling 5-3 encounter. Alüsha registered the tournament’s first hat-trick, while teammates T. Sang and Lipok added one goal each. Reguri responded with goals from Tayelo, Sehapa, and Kqwitaru.
The inaugural programme was graced by advisor, Science & Technology, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA and as the special guest.
Special guest Nienu highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Pochury, Chakhesang and Naga communities. He recalled the painful memory of atrocities committed in villages such as Phor, Yisi, and Matikhrü during the Naga freedom struggle, where leaders and villagers made immense sacrifices. He condemned the brutal acts of beheadings, torture, and sexual violence inflicted by the 16th Punjab Regiment, describing them as unacceptable and unforgivable. At the same time, he urged forgiveness through the transformative message of Christianity, encouraging perseverance, discipline and tolerance among the youth.
The event began with an invocation led by local catechist of St. Xavier Parish Church, Wachusie, followed by a welcome address from president of the Pochury Students’ Union (PSU), Rongley Leyri. A special song was presented by Project 5 PM.
In his solidarity message, vice president of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Vimeyiekho Vitso, recalled the resolute words of late Matikhrü Village Chief Lt. Shri Thah: “It’s a man’s pride—no surrender, no compromise for our birthright. This sacrifice is to protect our freedom; I shall gladly lay down my life for the future Naga generation.” He reaffirmed NSF’s solidarity with the people of Pochury.
President of Sümi Kiphimi Küqhakulu, Hipito Achumi, emphasized that the tournament transcends sport, serving as a platform to strengthen bonds between the Sümi and Pochury communities and foster greater unity among Nagas.
The programme also featured a special appearance by Atusa Katiry.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Games & Sports Secretary of PSU, Khunpeng, after which Azo Nienu officially declared the tournament open.
