DIMAPUR: A series of academic, cultural and professional programmes were organised across Nagaland in mid September, highlighting youth engagement, professional development, inclusive education and community service.
At Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit held an Orientation cum Volunteer Registration on September 16 at the School of Engineering and Technology. Programme Officer Shanchamo Yanthan briefed newly inducted volunteers on the objectives of NSS, describing it as a student oriented community service programme that connects higher education with society. He said the guiding motto “Not Me But You” places the welfare of others before self, encouraging students to understand community needs and learn through real life experiences. A total of 91 students participated, concluding with the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (VBYLD) 2027 Quiz, which tested general knowledge and awareness of national policies. Volunteers can take part in the nationwide quiz through the mybharat.gov.in portal.
At St. Joseph University, Dimapur, the Departments of Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering, in association with the Institution of Engineers India (IEI), celebrated Engineer’s Day 2026 on September 15 at the SJU Auditorium. The programme, themed “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization,” recognised the contribution of engineers to society. The event was chaired by students Khasela and Razwan, and began with an invocation by Rev. Fr. Dr. L. Anish. A welcome address was delivered by N.R. Manikandan, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering. Special performances by students added enthusiasm to the celebration. The highlight was a special address by Vice Chancellor Dr. D. Gnanadurai, who stressed innovation, digitalisation and sustainable practices in engineering. He urged students to adopt modern technologies and use their knowledge responsibly for the betterment of society. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Alovi N. Shohe, Assistant Professor, Computer Science Engineering, and a benediction by Ejualiu Joanna Ringdi.
On September 15, the Department of Linguistics, ICFAI University Nagaland organised an educational field visit to the Deaf Biblical School (DBS), Naharbari, Dimapur. Students, accompanied by faculty, observed visual gestural modalities and sign language mechanics, analysing the relationship between linguistic concepts and sign language. The visit provided practical exposure to communication methods within the deaf community, bridging classroom theory with real world language use. The interaction fostered empathy, cultural appreciation and inclusivity, giving students deeper insight into the social and cultural dynamics of deaf communication.
Meanwhile, the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, observed Xavier Board Week 2026 from September 7 to 13, 2026 under the theme “Celebrating 75 Years of Legacy and Beyond,” with the spirit of “Learning Through Service, Serving Through Learning.” The week featured academic, environmental and community based activities including essay writing, plantation drives, leadership sessions, candlelight remembrance, health and nutrition awareness, counselling, rural outreach and social entrepreneurship training. Trainees engaged with schools, villages, health centres, rehabilitation institutions and community organisations, gaining practical exposure while contributing to sustainability, education, public health, child protection, livelihood promotion and community well being. The observance reinforced NEISSR’s commitment to holistic professional formation, community engagement and responsible social work practice.
