LMCP cautions against digital fraud

KOHIMA, SEP 16 (NPN): Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Kohima, in collaboration with the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) and the Department of Economics & Political Science, KROS College, organised a consumer awareness programme on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumer” at Kevi Hall, KROS College on Wednesday.
Speaking on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, NSLSA member secretary, Neiko Akami, said the Act was enacted to safeguard consumer interests, establish authorities for timely redressal of disputes, and protect against unfair trade practices, defective goods, deficient services and exploitative practices. He highlighted the three tier redressal mechanism and outlined consumer rights including the right to safety, choice, information, redressal and education. Akami informed that complaints could be filed against restrictive trade practices, defective goods, deficient services, overcharging, hazardous services and misleading advertisements, including those in the digital realm.
Delivering the keynote address, Joint Controller, LMCP, Shiloh Kath, said the department functioned as a pro consumer agency by protecting rights and safety, promoting fair trade practices, and ensuring accuracy in weights and measures. He explained that under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011, mandatory declarations on weight, volume, manufacturer details and maximum retail price were required. Kath cautioned students about risks in online transactions, urging vigilance against fake websites, fraudulent calls, counterfeit products and digital fraud. Assistant Controller (HQ), LMCP, Shiekhozo, said the department had been conducting awareness programmes in educational institutions to familiarise students with consumer rights. He stressed that awareness would empower consumers to demand quality services and products and prevent exploitation. The programme was chaired by Vizongono Victoria Rote, Assistant Professor, Political Science, while the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Emilo Ovung, principal, KROS College.
