MOKOKCHUNG, SEP 16 (NPN): The 14th Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Trophy got underway on Wednesday at the Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium, Mokokchung, with eight teams vying for the prestigious state-level title. The biennial tournament is organized by the Luke Sasong Sporting Association (LSSA) under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union.
The opening match saw defending champions MH-10 Kohima face off against Evergreen Club Ungma. In a thrilling contest, MH-10 Kohima rallied back after losing the first set to secure victory with scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, marking a strong start to their campaign for a third consecutive title.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Keoshu Yimkhiung, as the guest of honor. Addressing the gathering, Yimkhiung highlighted the government’s sports policy aimed at identifying young talents through the Khelo India initiative, which has been extended to all districts and across multiple disciplines. He emphasized that sports in Nagaland are streamlined under the Nagaland Olympic Association, with volleyball recognized as a key discipline.
Encouraging the participants, the advisor underscored the importance of team spirit in achieving success. However, he lamented that Nagas often display enthusiasm only during sporting seasons, calling it a wasted investment when consistency and focus are not maintained. He urged youngsters to seize opportunities provided by such tournaments, maintain discipline and strive to compete at national and international levels.
