DIMAPUR: Naga National Council/Federal Government of Nagaland (NNC/FGN) under the leadership of Zhopra Vero, has strongly condemned the obstruction of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) delegation by personnel of the Assam Rifles at the Avakhung Check Gate, Meluri district, on September 19, 2026.
In a press release, Victor M Thuu, Killo kilonser, NNC/FGN, stated that NSF delegation was travelling to Myanmar for a cultural exchange and to meet fellow Naga students and communities across the India Myanmar boundary. It alleged that the incident demonstrated the disregard of Indian military forces for humanitarian values and rights.
The statement noted that Naga communities across the border have long maintained relationships through kinship, customary institutions, trade, marriage, religious fellowship and social exchange, long before the establishment of the Avakhung Check Gate. It questioned the moral and political authority of the Assam Rifles to interfere with traditional practices and accused them of tarnishing India’s democratic image by militarising the Naga homeland.
The NNC/FGN further stated that decades of restrictions under AFSPA, military checkpoints, permits and passes have deeply affected civilian rights and freedoms, creating distrust among the Naga people. It alleged that Indian armed forces continue to harass and dehumanise the public in the name of law and order, while destroying values that define the Naga identity.
Reiterating its stand, the NNC/FGN asserted that Nagas have lived, worked and maintained relationships across their homelands long before the existence of independent India, Myanmar or the Assam Rifles, and urged that Nagas be left alone to exercise their sovereign rights to preserve and nurture cultural and traditional values.
