The Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) presented “Son of Nagaland”, a documentary tracing the life, football career and legacy of Dr. Talimeren Ao, at CIMORB Hotel, Old Minister’s Hill, Kohima, on Thursday.
According to a press release the documentary, directed by Kilangtemsu Imsong, was formally released by Tourism & Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along as part of the commemorative activities for the 25th Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, Silver Jubilee Edition 2026.
The programme was attended by representatives of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), members of Dr. Talimeren Ao’s family, MDFA officials and members of the organising committee. It also featured the presentation of an official brochure to the minister and Dr. T. Ao’s granddaughter.
The proceedings began with opening remarks and an introduction to the documentary by Advisor, Transport and Technical Education, and Convener of the organising committee for the 25th Dr. T. Ao Football Tournament, Temjenmenba.
NFA joint secretary Chenonlo Woch, in his remarks, spoke of Dr. T. Ao’s continuing influence on younger generations and recalled his decision to return to Nagaland after leaving football at the height of his career. He also referred to the historical account of an offer from Arsenal Football Club, saying Dr. T. Ao’s return reflected his commitment to his people and society.
Representing the family, Dr. Talimeren Ao’s granddaughter Ningdangnaro Tally expressed gratitude to the government, Department of Youth Resources & Sports, NFA and the organising committee for bringing the documentary to fruition. She said the film would help preserve and carry forward her grandfather’s legacy for present and future generations.
The documentary, screened during the programme, chronicles Dr. T. Ao’s footballing journey through archival material, personal accounts and historical context, placing his achievements within the wider history of football in Nagaland and India.
Speaking after formally launching the documentary, Tourism & Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along stressed the need to take Son of Nagaland to wider platforms so that Dr. T. Ao’s life and achievements could reach audiences beyond Nagaland, particularly younger generations.
The minister also announced that the Department of Higher Education would launch a Dr. T. Ao lecture and discourse series at Fazl Ali College from next year on his birth anniversary, January 28. The annual programme will be organised in collaboration with the NFA and MDFA, with the aim of bringing Dr. T. Ao’s life and football career into educational and research discourse.
He further said photographs and reports on Dr. Talimeren Ao would be featured in the Hornbill Magazine 2026 as part of the commemoration of the Silver Jubilee Edition of the Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Championship.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Director, State Lotteries and Secretary of the organising committee, Imsongmeren, who acknowledged the support of Dr. T. Ao’s family and other stakeholders involved in the making of the documentary.
Dr. Talimeren Ao captained the Indian football team at the 1948 London Olympics, becoming part of the country’s early post-Independence sporting history. His journey from Nagaland to the national and international football stage remains a significant chapter in the state’s sporting heritage.
The documentary release comes ahead of the Silver Jubilee Edition of the Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, scheduled from October 13 to 31 at Renpo Lu Sports Complex, Ungma, Mokokchung.
