DIMAPUR, SEP 25 (NPN): The Nagaland Muaythai Team delivered a commendable performance at the 1st Northeast Regional Muaythai Championship 2026, held from September 21 to 24 at R. Dengthuama Hall, Aizawl. The contingent secured a total of 11 medals (6 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze), marking a significant achievement for the state’s growing Muaythai community.
Nagaland’s medal winners were – Gold: Lemnon L. Konyak (U-24, 48 kg), Pikato Awomi (U-24, 54 kg), Niuka Chophi (U-24, 60 kg), Aputo (Elite, 48 kg), Wapang Ao (Elite, 51 kg), Emtiramok Amri (Elite, 63.5 kg).
Silver: Mangkhao T. Konyak (Elite, 54 kg), Manjei Konyak (Elite, 57 kg).
Bronze: Yumahang Limbo (U-16, 57 kg), Huka Ayemi (U-24, 51 kg), Wangtah Konyak (Elite, 71 kg).
While Phongmei Phom (U-24, 67 kg) competed valiantly, he did not secure a medal. The Nagaland contingent was led by National coach UMAI, Hemavi Ayemi; H. Pangmei Konyak (Team Manager); Aboto Ayemi (Team Coach); Aboli M. Kinimi (Assistant Female Coach); Moakumzük Longchar (Referee & Judge)
Organised by the Muaythai Association of Mizoram, the four-day championship brought together around 350 fighters from all eight Northeastern states, competing across nearly 100 categories. The event also featured technical officials from across the region, underscoring its importance as a platform for competitive growth and regional sporting unity.
The championship was inaugurated by Minister for Sports & Youth Services, Government of Mizoram, Lalnghinglova Hmar, who highlighted the growing popularity of Muaythai in the region. The closing ceremony was graced by chief minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, who congratulated the athletes and emphasised the sport’s potential to empower youth and create professional opportunities.
The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) described the Aizawl championship as a celebration of Muaythai, youth empowerment and the values of discipline, respect, tradition and honour.
With 6 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals, the Nagaland team returned home with pride and valuable experience, adding another encouraging chapter to the growth of Muaythai in Nagaland and the Northeast.
