DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): The ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) has dismissed former chief minister and former governor Dr. SC Jamir’s recent remarks on President’s Rule in Nagaland, saying his proposal would amount to “Army rule” and add to the burden of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
NPF through its press bureau said it had taken note of Jamir’s response to its secretary general and maintained that differences of opinion in a democracy should be addressed through political reasoning and facts rather than personal insinuations.
Objecting to Jamir’s remark that NPF secretary general was working “on behalf of certain masters”, the party said Jamir’s statement did not address the substance of the debate.
NPF also criticised Jamir’s reference to the secretary general’s political learning coming from “Hebron, Manipur or Kohima”, describing the remark as factually unsupported and an attempt to create a misleading narrative about his political associations.
According to NPF, its secretary general had spoken “with all sincerity” on the Naga political issue both inside and outside the Assembly and did not require political guidance from any particular place or organisation.
The party said the historical references cited by Jamir did not answer the “central question”—
whether President’s Rule was warranted or justified in Nagaland under present circumstances.
NPF said the Naga political issue was too serious and sensitive to be reduced to a personal exchange, describing it as a genuine aspiration shared across sections of Naga society.
It said any settlement should be “honourable, inclusive, acceptable and lasting” and should not become another accord or agreement that failed to secure broad acceptance among Nagas or creates the basis for another political problem.
The party called for a mature discussion based on facts and present realities and reiterated its commitment to an enduring political settlement to the Naga issue.
