The Department of Youth Resources and Sports, in collaboration with the Task Force for Music and Art (TaFMA), organised the third edition of the Sonic Showdown Beat Contest for high school and higher secondary school students at RCEMPA, Jotsoma, Kohima, on Monday.
Model Higher Secondary School emerged as the champion in the closely contested competition, receiving Rs. 1 lakh, while Eden Academy, Mokokchung, secured the second prize of Rs. 50,000. Christian Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, finished third and received Rs. 30,000. All the winners were also rewarded with certificates
The programme was graced by Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) chairman Alun Hangsing (Retd.), who said music in the modern world had taken on a new dimension, transcending barriers and misconceptions to become a universal language connecting people across the world.
Hangsing said music could have a positive impact on emotions, attitudes, studies and outlook, and contribute towards shaping individuals into responsible and reasonable members of society. He described music as a special gift from God to humankind, provided it was not abused.
The judges for the contest were Obed Kath, Temsu Clover, Satem Kaba and Bendang Kichu. The programme was chaired by YRSO Naroenla Ozukum, while the welcome address was delivered by Aleno Sale. A collective of musicians presented a special performance. YRS assistant director K. Libemo Jami delivered the vote of thanks, while Sentiein Kichu served as the host. (Correspondent)
