Aizawl, Sep 30 (PTI): Activist Sonam Wangchuk has met former Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga in New Delhi and expressed his desire to study the state’s successful peace settlement and learn from the peace process, an MNF release said on Wednesday.
Wangchuk held a one-and-a-half-hour-long meeting with Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga at Mizoram House on Monday. The two discussed politics and contemporary issues, besides the reconciliation process.
“I want to study the successful memorandum of settlement of Mizoram and understand more about the experiences of Zoramthanga, who played a key role in the Mizo Peace Accord,” Wangchuk was quoted as saying in the release.
Zoramthanga told Wangchuk that the Mizo Peace Accord is considered one of the durable and successful peace settlements and has attracted interest from individuals and organisations seeking to study conflict resolution.
He also spoke about the Centre’s role in facilitating the peace process and the steps taken to bring different stakeholders into the settlement. He expressed hope that Mizoram’s experience will serve as an example of reconciliation. He also noted that Zoramthanga had led the MNF during the insurgency period, and later served as its president and the state’s chief minister.
Wangchuk also invited Zoramthanga to visit Ladakh.
