DIMAPUR, OCT 1 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has called for a statewide corporate prayer on October 4, 2026 (Sunday) amid growing concern over alcohol-related deaths and the harmful effects of illicit and suspected spurious liquor.
In an appeal, the NBCC urged churches and individuals to join the prayer during community worship or in their homes and other places, saying the situation should not be met only with “words, arguments or blame” but also with humility and prayer.
The council called for prayers for bereaved families, those suffering from alcohol-related illness, young people, civil society and community organisations working to protect lives, and authorities responsible for upholding and enforcing the law.
NBCC said alcohol consumption has serious consequences for individuals, families and communities, affecting physical and mental well-being, relationships, family life and young people. It said the recent deaths and illnesses reportedly associated with suspected spurious or adulterated liquor had again highlighted the need to protect human life.
The council also called for greater public awareness of the dangers of alcohol, support for individuals struggling with alcohol dependence, and continued efforts by churches to educate, counsel and care for affected families.
On the role of civil society, NBCC prayed for cooperation among student organisations, community bodies and authorities, and urged that efforts to address alcohol-related harm remain peaceful and focused on protecting human life.
The council also called for wisdom, courage and integrity among the state government, legislators, administrators, police, excise and prohibition authorities.
It suggested effective and consistent enforcement of the existing prohibition framework, including action against the supply of illicit liquor and the demand for alcohol.
NBCC said the prayer should look beyond the immediate crisis towards a “sober, healthy and peaceful Nagaland”, with stronger families, safer communities for young people and greater respect for the law.
It may be mentioned that at least 20 people have died in Mokokchung and Tuensang districts allegedly after consuming spurious or adulterated liquor with Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) seeking reports from state government and concerned authorities within four weeks.
