DIMAPUR, OCT 1 (NPN): The chief veterinary officer (CVO) Dimapur has warned against the indiscriminate dumping of dead animals and carcasses along roadsides, drains, nallahs, rivers and other public places in and around Dimapur district.
In a press release, CVO Dimapur Sentinungla Ao said such practices were unhygienic, posed risks to public health and could contribute to the spread of zoonotic diseases including anthrax, rabies and avian influenza. They could also cause environmental pollution, public nuisance and biohazard risks, she said.
CVO Dimapur has directed the public to refrain from such practices with immediate effect and said dead animals should be disposed of through deep burial with lime, away from water sources and human habitation. Farm and slaughter waste should be disposed of within farm premises or at designated dumping sites, she said.
CVO cautioned that violators found dumping carcasses in public places would be liable to penal action under relevant provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009.
