Former NLA Speaker ET Ezung passes away; CM, others condole

DIMAPUR, OCT 1 (NPN): Former Nagaland Legislative (NLA) speaker and former minister E.T. Ezung passed away in Dimapur on October 1, 2026. Ezung was 76 and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a granddaughter.
CM: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker Sharingain Longkumer and host of leaders mourned the demise of former Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker and former minister ET Ezung, who passed away in Dimapur on October 1.
In his condolence message to Mrs. Abeny Ezung, Rio described ET Ezung as a passionate and dedicated leader who served society selflessly, saying his long and distinguished service to the people of Nagaland and contributions to public life would be remembered with respect.
Rio also recalled Ezung’s role in the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF), through which elected representatives across political affiliations came together to engage with and support efforts towards a peaceful and honourable resolution of the Naga political issue.
Rio said Ezung’s demise had created a vacuum that would be difficult to fill and described it as a great loss to the Lotha community in particular and the Naga people in general. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for solace, strength and courage for them.
Speaker: Nagaland Legislative Speaker Sharingain Longkumer said Ezung was a three-time member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, having been first elected from the 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency to the 5th NLA and subsequently to the 7th and 10th Assemblies.
Longkumer said Ezung held several important responsibilities in the government, including deputy Speaker, Speaker and minister handling various key portfolios. He said Ezung devoted a significant part of his life to public service and the welfare of the people of Nagaland. The Speaker also recalled Ezung’s association with student and youth organisations, community institutions and other public forums, saying these reflected his commitment to society and concern for the welfare of the people.
On behalf of himself and members of the 14th NLA, Longkumer conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that Almighty God grant them strength to endure the loss.
Patton: Deputy chief minister Y Patton has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker and minister E. Thungchamo Ezung, who passed away in Dimapur on Thursday morning.
Patton said Ezung’s passing marked the end of a notable chapter in the political history of the State. He recalled Ezung’s extensive career in public life and described him as a prominent figure from Wokha district who worked for the welfare of the Lotha community and Naga society at large.
Patton conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, friends and well-wishers and prayed that God grant them solace and strength during the hour of grief, and that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.
NPCC: Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) also expressed grief over Ezung’s demise, saying he was serving as a member of its Core Committee/PAC. NPCC said Ezung, who hailed from the 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency, was a dedicated member of the Congress family who rendered valuable service to the party.
It said his commitment, contribution and association with the organisation would be remembered with respect and gratitude.
NPCC said his demise was a loss to the Congress party and all those who knew and worked with him, and conveyed condolences to his family, relatives, friends and well-wishers.

Supongmeren: NPCC president and Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir has expressed deep shock over the demise of former NLA Speaker E.T. Ezung, describing him as a “perfect gentleman” and veteran politician of the State.
Jamir said Ezung had served in different capacities in the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee and remained at the forefront of party affairs through both difficult and favourable times. He said Ezung’s demise was a great loss to the Congress party and the State.
“At this hour of sorrow, I along with all the rank and file of the NPCC share the pain with the bereaved family members,” Jamir said, praying for the departed soul to rest in peace.

LLRPO: Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO) has mourned the demise of veteran leader and former minister E.T. Ezung, describing his passing as a loss to the Lotha community.
LLRPO, through its assistant general secretary Zathungo Yanthan, said Ezung, a native of Yonchucho village, had a distinguished political career, having been elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency and served as Speaker of the Assembly.
It said Ezung also served as a cabinet minister and held various portfolios in the Nagaland government, including Power, Housing and Home Guards.
Recalling his family background, LLRPO said Ezung was the son of P.E. Ezung, whom it described as a prominent figure in Naga history and contemporary of A.Z. Phizo.
The organisation said Ezung made significant contributions to the welfare and development of the Lotha people in general and the Lotha Lower Range in particular. His dedication to public service and contribution to society would be fondly remembered, it added.
LLRPO joined the Lotha community in mourning the veteran leader and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. It prayed that Almighty God grant the family strength, comfort and solace to bear the loss and that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.

NECCC: North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) has mourned the demise of veteran Congress leader E.T. Ezung, with NECCC general secretary G.K. Zhimomi describing him as a senior party leader, father figure, guide and mentor.
Zhimomi said Ezung’s political journey began with his election to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1982 as an INC candidate from the 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency. He later served as Speaker of the NLA and Cabinet minister holding various portfolios during his multiple terms as a legislator.
In the Congress organisation, Zhimomi said Ezung served as working president of NPCC from 2018 to 2022 and member of various committees. At the time of his demise, he was a member of NPCC Core Committee, constituted by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in September 2025.
Describing Ezung as a thoroughbred gentleman in politics, Zhimomi said his humility and accessibility made him an example for younger generations of leaders.
Zhimomi said Ezung’s demise was an irreparable loss to the Congress organisation and a personal loss to him.
On behalf of NECCC chairman and former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki, Zhimomi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that Almighty God grant them solace and strength during their hour of grief. He prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

WDCC: Wokha District Congress Committee (WDCC) has mourned the demise of former NLA speaker and former minister E.T. Ezung.
WDCC said Ezung was first elected to the NLA from the 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency on a Congress ticket in 1982 and was re-elected in 1989. He was elected to the NLA in 2003 on an NDM ticket and later returned to the Congress, winning the constituency in 2008, 2013 and 2018.
WDCC said his demise was a great loss to the political fraternity in Nagaland in general and Wokha district in particular.
It said Ezung served as working president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee from 2018 to 2020 and was a member of NPCC Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at the time of his demise.
WDCC said Ezung was 76 and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a granddaughter.
The committee conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.

LJP (RV): Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) national secretary Richard Humtsoe has mourned the demise of veteran political leader, former Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker and former minister E.T. Ezung, describing his passing as a loss to the people of Nagaland and public life in the State.
Humtsoe said Ezung was a distinguished public servant who dedicated decades of his life to serving the people and strengthening democratic institutions.
He recalled that Ezung served as Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from 1985 to 1986, occupying one of the highest constitutional offices in the State. He also served as power minister and later as Housing and Home Guards minister.
He said Ezung’s long public career as a legislator, Speaker and minister represented a significant chapter in Nagaland’s political and democratic history. His contributions to parliamentary democracy, public administration and the affairs of the State would remain part of its institutional memory, he added.
Humtsoe conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, colleagues and all those mourning Ezung’s demise. He said Nagaland had lost a veteran public figure whose life was closely associated with the evolution of the State’s democratic institutions.
He prayed that Almighty God grant eternal rest to the departed soul and strength, courage and fortitude to the bereaved family to bear the loss.
