Intanki National Park observes Wildlife Week

DIMAPUR: Intanki National Park observed Wildlife Week Celebration 2026 on October 5 at Range A Camp, Peren, under the theme “Connecting Habitat, Thriving Wildlife.” The programme was organised to create awareness on wildlife conservation and highlight the importance of protecting and maintaining healthy habitats for the survival of wildlife.
As part of the celebration, a nature walk was held from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for community leaders, youth, students and teachers of Government High School, Beisumpuikam, and Haisaungbe High School, representing fringe villages of Intanki National Park. The activity provided participants an opportunity to experience the natural environment and develop a greater appreciation for wildlife and habitat conservation.
The formal programme commenced at 11 a.m. with Samom Khelen Singh, director, Intanki National Park, as the special guest, while Neithsote Kapfo, Dy. Ranger, Range B, chaired the session. The invocation was pronounced by Hanggam Disuang, pastor, Beisumpuikam Baptist Church, followed by a welcome address from Lungbay Rozoing, Dy. Ranger, O/C Range B.
A PowerPoint presentation on conservation challenges and forest and wildlife laws was delivered by Ilamwangbe Zeme, ACF, O/C Range A. He sensitised participants on relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, including sections relating to wildlife protection, offences and penalties, and responsibilities in preventing wildlife crimes.
Tadibe, Council chairman, Beisumpuikam Village, in his brief address, stressed the importance of community participation in wildlife conservation.
Delivering the keynote address, Samom Khelen Singh highlighted that awareness programmes strengthen public understanding of the importance of wildlife and their habitats, while nature walks provide direct opportunities to appreciate nature. He added that activities such as speech competitions encourage students to learn, reflect and express their views, thereby fostering conservation awareness among the younger generation. He further emphasised the need for cooperation between the Forest Department, schools and local communities in protecting wildlife and conserving habitats.
A speech competition was also organised, giving participants a platform to express their views on wildlife conservation. Winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded cash incentives along with certificates of merit.
The programme concluded with prize distribution and felicitation, followed by a vote of thanks by Rokovotso Meyase, FR II, Intanki National Park, Range B.
