SHILLONG, OCT 5: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma to institute an independent investigation into an alleged extortion racket reportedly operated by police personnel targeting truck drivers along the Shillong Bypass.
In a complaint submitted to the Chief Minister on Monday, the influential students’ body called for the constitution of an independent inquiry body free from police influence or intervention to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
The KSU also demanded the immediate removal of East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, alleging that his continued presence in office could hamper the investigation and lead to the tampering of evidence or intimidation of potential witnesses. The union further sought the removal of East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, accusing him of failing to address the alleged illegal extortion activities and expressing concern that he could influence the inquiry process.
The students’ body urged the state government to take swift action against all police personnel and other individuals found involved in the alleged racket, stressing the need to uphold accountability and public trust.
The KSU stated that it would not file a First Information Report (FIR) or a formal complaint with the police, arguing that the police department could not be expected to impartially investigate allegations involving its own personnel. According to the union, such a move would be ineffective and could undermine the search for justice.
The demand follows the KSU’s recent exposure of an alleged extortion network operating in the Mawkhanu and Thangshalai areas along the Shillong Bypass. Truck drivers reportedly claimed they were compelled to pay amounts ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 to police personnel stationed in a shed along the route.
Following the allegations, the Meghalaya Police suspended four constables, transferred the officer-in-charge of Diengpasoh Police Station, and ordered an internal inquiry into the matter.
The controversy has sparked concern over alleged misconduct within the police force and renewed calls for greater transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations across the state.
