MNF files police complaint over ‘fabricated’ video

AIZAWL, OCT 5 (PTI): The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) on Monday filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime police here over the alleged creation and circulation of a “forged and false” video purportedly showing party president and former CM Zoramthanga making remarks about providing annual financial assistance to poor people. The complaint filed on behalf of the MNF Legal Board by its secretary David R Lalsawmtluanga alleged that the video had been manipulated to make it appear that Zoramthanga said that the MNF would provide between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh annually to poor people if it returned to power in the Assembly polls in 2028. The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, also carries captions mocking the alleged promise, the complaint said. The MNF claimed that Zoramthanga had never made such remarks and accused those responsible for creating and circulating the video of attempting to tarnish his reputation and damage the image of the party.
It urged the police to trace the origin of the video and identify all those involved in its creation and dissemination.
The legal board named three social media users who it alleged had circulated or posted the video.
It said the fabricated video had also been circulated on Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram.
The MNF sought registration of the case under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and called for legal action against those responsible.
