DIMAPUR: The Provisional Government of NSCN/GPRN has expressed condolences to the families of 11 people who died in Tuensang district and nine in Mokokchung district following consumption of suspected spurious liquor, and called for strict enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989.
In a statement issued by its Media & Publicity Cell, the group said the deaths were not merely statistics but Naga lives lost due to what it described as “calculated greed”. It said adulterated and spurious liquor was being used to circumvent the NLTP Act and alleged that people were being killed through its continued circulation.
The Provisional Government said serious investigations were underway and assured that individuals found guilty and networks connected to the alleged criminal activity would be held accountable.
It also called upon the Nagaland Baptist Churches Council (NBCC), which has advocated prohibition, and Naga civil society to take a more active role in ensuring effective implementation of the NLTP Act.
The statement criticised the Nagaland government over what it described as inaction, saying authorities vested with the power to enforce the law must take action against the illegal liquor trade.
The group appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate in enforcement of the NLTP Act, stressing that collective action was urgently required.
