SHILLONG, OCT 7: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved the extension of the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by another six months to facilitate the conduct of elections. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the extension was necessitated by the ongoing delimitation and electoral revision processes. The previous six-month extension is due to end on 17th October.
“The Cabinet has approved the extension for another six months, within which we hope to complete the necessary processes and conduct the GHADC elections,” Sangma said.
Election to the GHADC, a constitutional body under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, was supposed to be held on April 10, 2026, but was postponed due to communal riots.
