IMPHAL, OCT 7: At least three houses were burnt down as suspected militants on Wednesday launched a fresh attack at the village in Manipur’s Senapati district adjoining Kangpokpi district where three villagers were killed in earlier attack.
Local sources said that the suspected militants opened fire at Kailenjang, a Naga village along the Senapati-Kangpokpi inter-district border today around 2pm before setting fire to at least three houses. There were no reports of casualty in the fresh attack.
Kailenjang is a Naga village located around 10 km west of Senapati district headquarters and at the border with Kangpokpi district. On September 26, suspected militants launched an armed assault in the village, killing three persons –two instantly and one succumbed to injuries on the next day – and injuring one.
The latest attack came at a time when Senapati based CSOs are seeking justice for the three individuals. A mass rally marched on the streets at Senapati district headquarters on October 2 last submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the DC highlighting a nine-point charter of demands.
In the memorandum, the NPO, organizer of the rally, sought a written response to the demands from the state government within seven days and threatened that democratic forms of agitation may follow in case of no positive response within the set deadline.
Among others, the memorandum sought constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of a senior police officer not below the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) which the report is to be submitted within 30 days and file the charge-sheet before the competent court within 45 days.
