KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, OCT 8 (NPN): Naga National Council (NNC) president and eldest daughter of NNC leader Angami Zapu Phizo (A.Z. Phizo), Adinno Z. Phizo passed away at a private hospital in Kohima on Thursday evening. She was 93.
According to reports, the funeral service is scheduled to be held on October 10, and her body will be taken to her native village, Khonoma.
Adinno assumed leadership of the NNC following the death of her father in London on April 30, 1990. She was appointed acting president at the NNC office in London by senior executive council members Khodao Yanthan and Yongkong, and was formally elected president at a general meeting held at Kohima Village Hall on May 12, 1990.
Adinno consistently upheld the original stand of the NNC, maintaining that the Naga Plebiscite of May 16, 1951, in which 99.9% of Nagas voted for independence, constituted the mandate of the Naga people. She reiterated the Naga right to self-determination and sovereign recognition.
NNC/FGN notification: Naga National Council (NNC) and Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) have announced the passing of NNC president Adinno Phizo, who died peacefully after a brief illness at 8 p.m. on October 8, in Kohima.
NNC and FGN said the Naga people mourned the passing of their national leader, who throughout her life carried the responsibilities entrusted to her in service of the Naga national struggle with dignity, integrity and strength, and remained committed to the political institution and aspirations of the Naga people till her last breath.
NNC and FGN extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the departed leader.
They said the authorities of NNC and FGN were attending to the necessary arrangements and that further official information concerning the period of mourning, funeral arrangements and other related matters would be communicated in due course.
NNC and FGN called upon the Naga people to observe the solemn moment with peace, dignity, restraint and unity during the period of national mourning.
