DIMAPUR, OCT 10 (NPN): Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) has expressed concern over the ongoing impasse between the Centre Chakhesang Youth Organisation (CCYO) and Forest department over the alleged arbitrary detention of Vezhoto Hesuh by Wildlife Crime Control Unit, Dimapur.
In a statement, CYF president Kevesa Khamo said it had been observing developments and efforts to resolve the issue, but expressed disappointment over what it described as a lack of seriousness and commitment on the part of the department to reach a logical and acceptable conclusion. CYF said the matter required urgent attention from the state government, particularly in view of the constitutional safeguards under Article 371A concerning Naga customary practices, traditions, and ownership and transfer of land and its resources.
It said the concerns raised by Chakhesang community deserved fair consideration and called for transparency, mutual respect and a clear understanding of the constitutional and customary issues involved. CYF also urged the government to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Hesuh’s detention were examined fairly and impartially, in accordance with the rule of law and principles of natural justice. Warning that prolonging the impasse could deepen mistrust and widen the gap between the public and the government, CYF called for an early and constructive resolution in the interest of peace, mutual understanding and harmonious relations.
The front said it hoped the government would act promptly and responsibly to bring the matter to a just and amicable conclusion. It cautioned that failure to resolve the issue at the earliest would leave it with no option but to intervene and pursue its democratic rights, adding that the government would be held solely responsible for any untoward incident.
