Jithin’s late strike helps NorthEast United stun Mohun Bagan in ISL

GUWAHATI, OCT 12 (AGENCIES): Substitute Jithin M.S. struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner as NorthEast United FC defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 in their Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 opener at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Monday.
With the match heading towards a goalless draw, Jithin broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute. The Highlanders launched a swift counterattack, with the forward exploiting space behind the Mohun Bagan defence before calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.
The late winner sparked celebrations among the home supporters at Sarusajai and secured all three points for NorthEast United.
Mohun Bagan had dominated much of the second half, creating several opportunities but failing to convert them. The visitors registered 19 attempts, including six on target, but NorthEast United goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh stood firm to keep his side in the contest.
Mohun Bagan head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis introduced Liston Colaço, Miguel Figueira and Manvir Singh as the visitors intensified their search for a breakthrough.
NorthEast United were forced to defend deep for long periods, with Pramveer Ranbir and substitute Saikhom Thoiba Singh making crucial blocks and clearances. Pramveer was booked in the 69th minute as the Highlanders struggled to contain Mohun Bagan’s attacking pressure.
Despite enjoying the better chances, Mohun Bagan could not find a way through the NorthEast United defence.
The visitors were eventually punished for their missed opportunities when Jithin struck on the counterattack in stoppage time. Jithin and Alaeddine Ajaraie were booked during the celebrations, but NorthEast United held on through the remaining minutes to secure a memorable victory. The result gave the Highlanders a winning start to their ISL campaign, while Mohun Bagan were left to rue their missed chances.
