CM calls for coordinated efforts ahead of Hornbill Festival

DIMAPUR: State chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio has called for coordinated efforts among government departments and local communities to ensure the smooth conduct of the 27th Hornbill Festival 2026.
According to a DIPR report, the chief minister, while addressing a preparatory meeting at Bamboo Hall, Kisama, on Tuesday, stressed the need for good roads, reliable power and water supply, security, traffic management, cleanliness, adequate parking and public conveniences.
He said he would convene a separate meeting with the departments concerned to address road-related issues. Rio also urged villages to take responsibility for keeping roads clean, particularly highways passing through or near their areas. He directed all departments to appoint nodal officers for the festival to ensure effective coordination and timely action.
Rio called upon departments and other stakeholders to work collectively to ensure all necessary arrangements were in place.
Advisor to CM, Abu Metha described the Hornbill Festival as Nagaland’s valuable intellectual property and a major platform for international engagement and economic activity. What began as a three-day event was later expanded to five days and then to 10 days, evolving into a major tourism festival featuring more than 300 events across dozens of venues in the state, he said.
Metha said the festival had brought Nagaland to the attention of the international community and emerged as an important economic driver. He also highlighted the growing appeal of mini-Hornbill festivals in other districts, which are attracting tourists and expanding the state’s tourism offerings.
Emphasising sustainability, Metha said the festival should serve as a model for responsible event management through rainwater harvesting, proper waste disposal and the use of renewable energy. He said it offered an opportunity to demonstrate environmentally sustainable practices on a large scale.
He also highlighted the potential of international partnerships, roundtable engagements and collaborations in art, music and films to promote Nagaland’s creative economy.
Tourism minister Temjen Imna Along highlighted the growing popularity of mini-Hornbill festivals and increasing interest among foreign dignitaries in participating in the celebrations.
Commissioner and secretary for tourism Kovi Meyase outlined key logistical requirements, including water supply, sanitation, vehicle-pass management and other arrangements for the festival.
The department of art and culture briefed the meeting on preparations for cultural troupes and tribal guests, while the department of youth resources and sports outlined planned activities, including an e-sports tournament. Representatives of other departments also presented their proposed activities and preparations.
