DIMAPUR, OCT 13 (NPN): Nagaland powerlifter Namteulung Newme, son of Isak Newme, arrived at Dimapur Airport on Tuesday after winning three gold medals representing India at the World Cup Powerlifting Championship 2026 held in Nepal.
Newme clinched gold medals in the squat, bench press and deadlift events, marking a significant achievement for the state at the international championship. Speaking about his achievement, the 20-year-old powerlifter said he was extremely happy and found it difficult to express his feelings in words. He described the championship as a mixed experience, with challenging moments along the way, but said the outcome made the journey worthwhile.
Newme competed in the Single-Ply Deadlift (SPD) full powerlifting category, along with the individual bench press and squat events, securing first place in all three.
The championship was held over three days, with the team staying in Kathmandu, Nepal, from around October 9 to 12. The Indian contingent comprised around seven members and Newme was the only representative from the Northeast on the team.
He said his participation followed the selection process through national and international-level competitions. He had previously competed at the international level twice, including the Shiro Classic and Ichala events. Although he had secured second and third positions on earlier occasions, this was his first time winning three gold medals.
Newme lifted 202.5 kg in the squat, 125 kg in the bench press and 200 kg in the deadlift.
Despite representing India at the international championship, Newme said he did not receive financial assistance or sponsorship from any source. He credited his father, gym trainer and his own gym clients for helping him meet the expenses and travel to Nepal.
He dedicated his three gold medals to his mother, acknowledging her constant support and sacrifices, particularly in preparing his meals and managing his daily needs throughout his training.
Newme began his fitness journey around 2020–2021 and currently works as a trainer at Puting Gym. He also acknowledged the support of his colleague Imnalong (Imnamaren), a trainer at Ultra Fitness, who helped him with workouts and practice.
