Mizoram gov calls for strengthening border trade

Aizawl, Oct 15 (PTI): Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Thursday called for a comprehensive plan to strengthen border trade and curb illegal activities along the international border with Myanmar.
Singh made the remarks at a meeting with senior officials of the commerce and industries and home departments at Lok Bhavan here to review measures to improve border trade and related infrastructure.
Emphasising the need for long-term planning, the governor said groundwork should be completed well in advance to ensure that future expansion of border trade does not create difficulties.
He called for a comprehensive plan bringing all related activities under a single framework.
Singh also highlighted upcoming connectivity projects, including improved road networks and the proposed extension of railway lines up to the international border, and stressed that preparations should not be delayed until the projects are completed.
He urged officials to utilise the current period to complete the necessary groundwork and put institutional and regulatory mechanisms in place.
He also assured them of his full support whenever required.
The meeting reviewed progress and challenges related to key border-trade infrastructure, including border haats, land customs stations, integrated check posts and land ports, the Lok Bhavan official said.
The governor directed that well-prepared proposals, along with detailed blueprints prepared by the Joint Working Group, be submitted to the authorities concerned at the earliest to facilitate timely implementation of the projects, the official said.
