DIMAPUR, OCT 18 (NPN): Despite an earlier report highlighting the dilapidated condition of the footpath along Nyamo Road in Dimapur, the stretch continues to pose a serious safety hazard to pedestrians, with its condition deteriorating further.
The footpath, marked by broken and missing tiles, jagged concrete, exposed reinforcement bars and uneven surfaces, has made walking increasingly difficult and hazardous. The damaged stretch poses particular challenges for elderly people and persons with visual impairments.
The situation becomes more dangerous after dusk due to inadequate street lighting, making it difficult for pedestrians to identify damaged sections.
A frequent user of the footpath described walking along the stretch at night as risky, citing poor visibility and the increased likelihood of falling.
Beyond the inconvenience to pedestrians, the deteriorating condition has raised questions about accountability in the event of an accident.
With broken tiles, exposed reinforcement bars and inadequate lighting posing risks, the concerned authorities need to clarify which department is responsible for maintaining the stretch.
In the event of an accident caused by negligence, questions of accountability and compensation could arise, depending on the circumstances and the legal responsibility of the authority concerned.
The lack of timely repairs has heightened concerns over public safety and the need for preventive action.
The worsening condition underscores the need for the concerned authorities to inspect the stretch, clarify responsibility for its maintenance, repair the damaged footpath and improve street lighting to ensure safe and convenient movement for pedestrians.
