Kohima College 58th sports meet begins

DIMAPUR, Oct 28 (NPN): Kohima College, Kohima, kicked off its 58th Annual Sports Meet 2026 on Tuesday at the college ground under the theme “Unleashing the Spirit of Sportsmanship.” The three-day event, scheduled to conclude on October 30, aims to promote sportsmanship, discipline and the holistic development of students.
Principal of T.M. Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, Kelhikha Kenye, attended the programme as the special guest and delivered the special address. Expressing his delight at being part of the college’s sports week, he said the event was an occasion eagerly anticipated by students and encouraged them to participate wholeheartedly and enjoy the competitions.
Highlighting the role of sports in character building, Kenye said sporting activities impart valuable life lessons by fostering discipline, regular practice, prioritisation and a strong work ethic. He emphasised that these qualities help students develop the determination and commitment required to succeed in life.
He also urged students to accept both victory and defeat with grace, stating that success should be celebrated with humility, while defeat should serve as motivation to return stronger and more determined.
Referring to the theme of the sports meet, Kenye encouraged the participants, whom he described as the “KCK fighters,” to remain committed and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship despite changing weather conditions. He further urged them to give their best in every competition while cherishing the friendships and shared experiences that sports create.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Games and Sports Secretary, Kethosilie Sopfünuo, reaffirming the participants’ commitment to fair play, discipline and sportsmanship.
Earlier, the inaugural programme began with the flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by the Kohima College anthem and an invocation led by Rachel SY Konyak. A special number presented by Jessi added to the opening ceremony.
The inaugural ceremony concluded with the special guest officially kicking off the sports meet, marking the beginning of the sporting activities scheduled over the three days.
