DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU) has called off its agitation and ended the closure of the executive engineer’s office of PWD (R&B) in Noklak after the department assured priority and timely execution of key road projects in the district.
KSU through its media cell said the decision followed a joint meeting with the public works department (R&B) and contractor M/s Naagaamii Infra Tech Pvt. Ltd. to discuss the foreclosure of the Chendang Saddle-Noklak-Pangsha Road (Phase-II) and the Noklak-Thonoknyu road via Sanglao.
At the meeting, KSU said it expressed strong displeasure over land compensation being cited as a reason for closure of the projects during the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly session.
It said the engineer-in-chief clarified that projects funded under the NLCPR scheme did not provide for land compensation. KSU maintained that the Khiamniungan community had never claimed or demanded compensation for land used for the developmental works. The contractor apologised to KSU for citing land compensation issues while seeking an extension of time for the projects. The union representatives accepted the apology.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of road connectivity to Thonoknyu, an administrative headquarters.
The department informed KSU that a proposal had been submitted to the state government under its SASCI 2026-27 priorities for improving the Peshu-Thonoknyu road. It also assured the union that necessary action would be initiated with the state government to address concerns raised by KSU and the people of Noklak district.
KSU reiterated that it had never demanded compensation for developmental activities in the district and said public organisations and citizens remained united in supporting the uninterrupted implementation of development projects.
KSU placed four key demands before the department:
Chendang Saddle–Noklak–Pangsha Road (Phase-II): Complete the 31-km project, sanctioned at an approved cost of Rs.164.80 crore, within 12 months.
Noklak–Thonoknyu Road via Sanglao: Upgrade and complete the road to major district road (MDR) standards, with an intermediate-lane carriageway width of 5.5 metres, within 24 months.
Noklak–Pathso Road: Expedite ongoing construction to ensure timely completion.
Lang River–Taingan (Myanmar) Road: Complete the 88-km road, including its extension to Wui village via Nokhu and Choklangan, within the stipulated timeframe and in accordance with the revised detailed project report dated November 19, 2024.
The department assured KSU that the projects would be accorded top priority and that necessary measures would be taken to ensure timely execution.
Following these assurances, KSU called off the agitation and ended the closure of the executive engineer’s office, PWD (R&B), Noklak.
The union said it expected the department to honour its commitments and complete the projects within the stipulated timelines without further delay, in the interest of the people of Noklak district and the region.
