NGBF urges govt to withdraw restrictions on GBs

DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) has urged the state government to reconsider and withdraw restrictions on the appointment and functioning of Gaonburas (GBs) in both urban and rural areas, asserting that the traditional institution must be protected and preserved.
NGBF through its media cell informed that the demand was among three resolutions adopted at the Federation’s executive meeting held in Dimapur on October 30, following deliberations on issues concerning the organisation and the institution of GBs in Nagaland.
The house expressed disappointment over government directives imposing restrictions, particularly in urban areas, stating that the measures undermined the traditional institution despite repeated appeals and representations by the federation.
NGBF also raised concern that certain provisions of the government-enforced Code of Ethics for GBs appeared to infringe upon citizens’ fundamental rights and constitutional freedoms.
The federation maintained that the institution of Gaonburas was integral to Naga customary practices, traditions and the traditional system of village administration. It said the institution’s historical significance, dignity, authority and legitimate role must be recognised and safeguarded by the government.
In another resolution, the federation expressed concern over the proliferation of Naga political factions, saying the formation of additional groups, amid more than 30 existing factions, was unwelcome at a time when people were awaiting an early, peaceful and honourable political solution.
NGBF also pointed to the burden of multiple taxations imposed by various factions, which it said had caused hardship to the public. NGBF appealed to all concerned to refrain from forming more factions and instead work collectively towards resolving the Naga political issue.
The meeting also resolved to hold the NGBF general session 2027 in Dimapur district and endorsed the Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA) to host and organise the event.
