DIMAPUR, NOV 3 (NPN): Lotha Middle Range Students Union (LMRSU) has threatened to shut down all government schools across 26 villages if the state government fails to provide written assurance within 48 hours to address the shortage of teachers and staff at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Sungro.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, LMRSU vice-president Zaben L Ngullie said the union was compelled to act following prolonged neglect by the department. He said the union highlighted manpower shortages during a tour of education and medical sectors across Lotha Middle Range in March 2025. Its representation sought a Lotha language teacher, a postgraduate teacher for alternative English and a lower division assistant. A reminder submitted on May 19 yielded no action, it alleged. Another representation on August 24, 2026, cited the impact of teacher shortages. After a press meet at Sanis on August 26 and a seven-day ultimatum, the department gave verbal assurances that remained unfulfilled, LMRSU said.
Union representative Tumbeni Ngullie said GHSS Sungro had 153 students from Classes VI to XII, the second-highest enrolment at a government higher secondary school in Wokha district.
The union demanded two PGTs, two graduate teachers (GTs), two primary teachers, retention of graduate mathematics teacher post, one LDA-cum-UDA and one science laboratory attendant.
LMRSU said its indefinite agitation entered the second day, warning that failure to provide written assurance within 48 hours would prompt closure of all government schools under Lotha Middle Range, with civil society organisations joining the move. It held the department responsible for any further disruption to academic activities.
