Kiyanilie calls attention to landslides

Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie, has called immediate attention to the landslides here in New Market area and suggested remedial measures to prevent further landslides and sinking of earth.
The Speaker who made a spot assessment of the affected area on Saturday, said he had earlier personally written to three ministers – Urban Development, Planning and Coordination and Roads & Bridges – urging for immediate action in regard to landslides in New Market.
Among the suggestions forwarded by the Speaker in his letter included construction of new drains and repair of damaged drains leading to landslide areas affecting many houses, repair of New Market road including black topping from NST Station to Naga Hospital, construction of retaining walls and footsteps, construction of toilets, and hygienic slaughter house.
Kiyanilie said if the remedial measures were not implemented, then the residents of New Market would continue to suffer, especially during rainy seasons. It may be mentioned New Market area falls under 8th Western Angami A/C, the home constituency of the Speaker.
The Speaker in the letter also informed that the chairman and secretary of New Market Panchayat had submitted a representation to him citing the numerous problems faced by the people of the area due to landslides, which have become an annual affair.
“This colony forms one of the vital localities of the capital where the NH-39 passes through and the historic One Mile Ladies’ Road forms part of its upper boundary and is the heart line of Kohima,” Kiyanilie said. He however regretted that the area was situated on a geologically unstable and landslide-prone zone.
The Speaker hoped that the departments concerned would take up necessary actions without further delay in the greater interest of the residents of New Market.
