Incessant rainfall across Manipur in the last two days caused water logging in several areas, leading to disruption in the movement of traffic in Imphal, the capital city and spelling trouble for commuters.
The heavy to moderate rainfall also triggered landslides at various places in the hill district of Ukhrul on Thursday, reports said.
District administrations in hill districts like Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel have issued advisories asking the people to stay alert while citing the weather forecasts issued by the pertinent authorities.
The IMD warned of heavy to medium rainfall in Manipur in the next two days (May 30 and 31) with a red alert in Tamenglong and Senapati districts.
While asking to avoid travel during periods of intense rainfall or wind, the Senapati district administration advised its residents to check for traffic congestion and to stay updated with the forecast issued by the official weather and alerts issued by local and national authorities before departure.
“Do not take shelter under trees or stay near metal objects during thunderstorms and lightning,” it advised while asking the people to reinforce and secure loose objects in and around their homes.
The residents were also advised to unplug electrical appliances and avoid using electronic devices during lightning. On the other hand, Chandel district police advised the people of the district to avoid fishing or venturing near riverbanks of Chakpi River where water level had significantly risen due to continuous heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD’s Imphal Meteorological Centre, a significant rainfall was reported in the hill districts of the state with Moreh (Manipur’s town at Indo-Myanmar border) recording the highest rainfall at 102 mm. It was followed by Kamjong (96 mm), Chandel (76 mm), and Ukhrul (60.8 mm).
The automatic rain gauge install at Imphal airport recorded 36.5 mm of rainfall, 38 mm in Moirang of Bishnupur district and 47.5 mm in Thoubal district headquarters,. 42.5 mm in Lilong of Thoubal district, 29 mm in Lamshang of Imphal West district while the automatic rain gauge in Jiribam district recorded 28mm rainfall.
The continuous rain in the last two days triggered water-logging in several areas within the Imphal city and its outskirts. Places like Kakwa, Thangmeiband and Sagolband in the city witnessed severe water logging.
The overall traffic movement has been on the slower side for hours, with the two-wheelers mainly facing inconvenience due to rainwater. Rising river levels were also observed with Nambul River that passes through the city running above the warning level.
The water levels of the major rivers like Iril River and Imphal River were rising due to the high rainfall recorded in the hill areas. However, they were still running below the warning levels.
Manipur had experienced widespread flooding after Cyclone Remal struck the region in late May last year.
